One of the offseason’s major roster revisions occurred with the Stefon Diggs trade.
Buffalo sent its star receiver to Houston after a productive four seasons, during which the team delivered Pro Bowl numbers. However, a clear degree of friction was evident, and the organization required a reset.
What Pushed Stefon Diggs and the Bills to Split?

He believed it was a change in Buffalo’s usage of him, not a sudden collapse in his play. Prior to the trade becoming official, bitter social media posts and public body language were observed.
General manager Brandon Beane framed the decision through a winning lens, insisting the front office still believed moving on was the right path despite the optics. Buffalo absorbed a massive dead-cap charge to make it happen, signaling just how strained things had become. The move was as much about resetting the culture around Josh Allen as it was about financial flexibility.
Houston’s bet was straightforward. They needed an elite route-runner to give Stroud more options and shorten the learning curve for their second-year quarterback. The pick cost was manageable for a team operating on a win-now timeline, and Diggs instantly upgraded a receiver room that lacked proven veterans. The Texans were building fast, and Diggs fit their urgency.
The verdict depends on perspective. Buffalo gained cap space and draft capital while removing a source of tension. Houston landed a high-level talent to pair with a rising star at quarterback.
He later joined the Patriots, turning the page yet again with a fresh role in New England. It signaled another reset in both environment and expectations.
The real measure will be whether Diggs recaptures his Buffalo peak in Houston’s offense and if the Bills find equal value with the picks and culture shift they prioritized.
