Jessica Pegula wrapped up a memorable week at the 2025 China Open with a heartfelt message. After falling just short of a place in the final, the American tennis star took to social media to reflect on her journey. She called her semifinal loss “brutal” but expressed gratitude to the fans and organizers for their support.
How Did Jessica Pegula Battle Through Her Matches at the 2025 China Open?
As the fifth seed, she stormed through her opening match against Ajla Tomljanović with a 6-0, 6-3 victory. In the second round, she came from a set down to defeat Britain’s Emma Raducanu 3-6, 7-6(9), 6-0. In the Round of 16, she overcame Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-1.
The American’s persistence shone through again in the quarterfinals against compatriot Emma Navarro. Despite dropping the first set, Pegula rebounded strongly to win 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-1 and book her spot in the semifinals.
Facing Czech tennis player Linda Nosková, Pegula appeared poised for victory after holding three match points in the deciding set. However, Nosková mounted a gutsy comeback to edge out the win 6-3, 1-6, 7-6(6) on Saturday.
Nosková advanced to her maiden WTA 1000 final, where she’ll take on another American, Amanda Anisimova, who overcame defending champion Coco Gauff to clinch the final berth.
Soon after her exit, Pegula shared her thoughts with fans on Instagram, posting a few photos from her semifinal match along with a caption that read, “brutallll but gave it my all. Thank you @chinaopen and all the fans this week.”

Pegula also competed in doubles alongside fellow American Ashlyn Krueger, though the pair exited early after a 4-6, 6-7(3) loss to China’s Xu Yifan and Yang Zhaoxuan.
Looking ahead, Pegula will now make her third appearance in the Wuhan Open, a WTA 1000 event. She made her Wuhan Open debut in 2019, losing in straight sets to Polona Hercog. Last year, Pegula won her opening round against Anastasia Potapova but lost in the next round to Xinyu Wang.
This year, the sixth seed received a bye into the second round, where she will take on either compatriot Ashlyn Krueger or Hailey Baptiste. She also partnered with Krueger in doubles and will take on Kateřina Siniaková and Storm Hunter in the first round.
