Jannik Sinner Makes His Feelings Clear on Carlos Alcaraz’s Shanghai Masters Absence

While Carlos Alcaraz takes time to heal and recharge, the stage is set for others to seize the spotlight.

Jannik Sinner, the top-seeded player at the ongoing Shanghai Masters, has ruminated on his closest rival, Carlos Alcaraz’s, absence from the star-studded event. Both Alcaraz and Sinner began their Asian hard-court campaigns on a high note.

While Sinner won in Beijing, Alcaraz took home the silverware in Tokyo. Earlier, the duo also split the 4 Grand Slams for the second year running.

What Does Jannik Sinner Think of Carlos Alcaraz’s Absence from Shanghai?

Sinner, while interacting with the press, asserted that Alcaraz’s absence from the Shanghai Masters is “very unfortunate,” admitting that the Spaniard’s presence is missed both by players and fans alike.

“Yeah, it’s very unfortunate that Carlos is not here also, you know,” Sinner said. “I feel like Carlos is the man who people want to see in tournaments, so it’s very unfortunate he’s not here.”

Still, the Italian remained upbeat about the tournament’s star power, especially with 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic set to headline the same evening.

Djokovic, who reached the semifinals of each of the Grand Slams this year, unexpectedly confirmed his participation in Shanghai at the last moment.

“Yeah, I mean, it’s great,” Sinner said. “Obviously, you know, Novak coming back here to play, it’s great for the fans.”

While the Serb will play Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in the next round, Sinner will play No. 27 seed Tallon Griekspoor.

Sinner, who continues to establish himself among the game’s elite, relished the chance to share the stage with the world No. 7. “I’m very early in my career still, but I’m very happy to play after Novak. It’s great for the fans, it’s great to hopefully watch some good tennis in both matches,” he added.

The Italian added, “You know, it’s still great to have Novak and me and many other players.”

Why Carlos Alcaraz Has Pulled Out Of The Shanghai Masters

Carlos Alcaraz’s much-anticipated return to the Rolex Shanghai Masters did not happen after the Spaniard was forced to withdraw due to a left ankle injury.

The world No. 1 hurt his ankle during his opening match in Tokyo against Sebastian Baez but pushed through the pain to claim his ATP Tour-leading eighth title of the season.

Announcing his withdrawal on Instagram Stories, Alcaraz said, “I’m very disappointed to announce that I won’t be able to play the Rolex Shanghai Masters this year! Unfortunately, I’ve been struggling with some physical issues and, after discussing with my team, we believe the best decision is to rest and recover.”

He added, “I was really looking forward to playing in front of the amazing fans in Shanghai again. I hope to be back soon and see my Chinese fans next year!”

While the Spanish star takes time to heal and recharge, the stage is set for others to seize the spotlight.
