WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert ‘Disheartened’ Over Napheesa Collier, Players’ Comments

WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert responds to Napheesa Collier’s harsh criticism over her commitment to the league. Can she repair trust?

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert finally broke her silence after Minnesota Lynx star Napheesa Collier’s scathing remarks during her exit interview shook the league.

Collier accused Engelbert of poor leadership and of not caring about players, even claiming the commissioner said the players should be on their knees and thankful for the league’s broadcast deal she secured. Collier’s statement sparked a wave of support from stars like A’ja Wilson and Angel Reese, along with Lynx coach Cheryl Reeve and Fever’s coach Stephanie White.

Now Engelbert has gone on the record, and she’s clearly in damage-control mode.

What Cathy Engelbert Said Over Napheesa Collier’s Comments?

Engelbert had previously issued a statement denying the allegations made by Collier. But during the press conference ahead of Friday’s Game 1 of the WNBA Finals, Engelbert delivered her most pointed response yet, admitting she was shaken by the criticism.

“I was disheartened to hear that some players feel the league and me personally do not care about them or listen to them,” Engelbert said. “If the players in the W don’t feel appreciated and valued by the league, then we have to do better and I have to do better.”

Engelbert’s tone was defensive but conciliatory. She denied making some of the alleged remarks, saying: “Obviously, I did not make those comments. But again, I’m not going to get into every point counterpoint, it’s not productive here.”

That choice of words shows the WNBA commissioner trying to steady the ship without pouring gasoline on the fire. The problem is that Collier’s status as an All-Star, a Finals MVP, and vice president of the WNBPA gives her complaints weight. When players like Wilson and Reese echo her frustrations, it’s not just one superstar venting; it’s a groundswell.

The timing couldn’t be worse either. The WNBA Finals are in full swing. Meanwhile, the league is staring down an October 31 deadline for collective bargaining talks with the union, and tensions are already high over bad officiating, and after the celebrated coach, Reeve, was fined $15,000 for ripping officiating in the semifinals.

Engelbert’s leadership résumé is complicated. Since taking over in 2019, she’s delivered major wins – rising attendance, record TV ratings, a $200 million annual media rights deal, and plans to expand the league to 18 teams.

Yet players argue those gains haven’t improved their salaries or daily working environment. As Collier bluntly put it, the progress isn’t trickling down to those who matter the most in the league.

What Happens if Engelbert Can’t Rebuild Trust?

That’s the question hanging over Engelbert’s future. If the athletes don’t trust the commissioner, how sustainable is her leadership?

Some insiders already whispered that she might step aside after CBA talks, something Engelbert has denied, saying she is not a quitter. Likewise, the league also quickly called those reports “categorically false.” Still, perception matters, and right now, Engelbert looks isolated.

The emergence of “Unrivaled,” the player-led three-on-three league co-founded by Collier and Breanna Stewart, only cranks up the pressure. Fans and players see that venture as transparent and player-first, the very qualities critics say the WNBA lacks.

If Engelbert can’t convince her stars that the league values them, she risks losing the locker room. But her comments this week show she understands the urgency to calm the storm that Collier’s comments have brewed.

The next few weeks, with the Finals spotlight and CBA talks looming, will determine whether that promise is enough. If Engelbert can’t regain trust, the WNBA’s momentum could stall right when it seemed ready to break through.
