When the NFL world came for Shedeur Sanders, his family had his back. After the Cleveland Browns’ rookie quarterback’s viral silent interview sparked a media firestorm, his sister, Alabama A&M basketball player Shelomi Sanders, took to social media to call out the critics and defend her brother’s controversial move.
How Did Shelomi Sanders Defend Her Brother?
In her Instagram story, Shelomi Sanders shared a meme of her brother’s silent interview with the caption: “It’s a problem when he talk and it’s a problem when he don’t lol make it make sense.” Her post also included a tweet from a Colorado fan account that read, “Shedeur Sanders does a full interview on MUTE,” followed by crying-laughing emojis.

This message echoed the sentiment of their father, Deion Sanders, who showed his approval shortly after the video went viral. On an Instagram post by Deion Jr., the elder Sanders commented, “Good one son. You did that,” along with laughing emojis.
Shelomi, who plays basketball at Alabama A&M, was one of several Sanders family members who publicly supported Shedeur’s unusual response to the media.
What Happened During Shedeur Sanders’ Viral Interview?
The situation unfolded on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, when Sanders entered the locker room after learning that Dillon Gabriel would be starting at quarterback for the Week 5 game against the Minnesota Vikings. Sanders pointed to his headset and throat when reporters began asking questions, signaling he would not speak on the record. He silently repeated this gesture for several more questions before a Browns media relations staffer stepped in and ended the session.
This silent treatment came just days after Sanders had told reporters on September 25 that he believed he could play better than some current NFL starters. That comment drew sharp criticism, particularly from former NFL coach Rex Ryan, who called the rookie an “embarrassment” on ESPN’s “Get Up,” saying, “this kid talks and he runs his mouth.” As a result, many believe Sanders’ pantomime was a direct response to Ryan’s comments. Following the incident, Coach Kevin Stefanski downplayed it, and the Browns did not issue any discipline.
Sanders has not yet taken a regular-season snap for Cleveland. During the preseason, he completed 17 of 29 passes for 152 yards and two touchdowns. His strongest performance was in the preseason opener against the Carolina Panthers, where he went 14-for-23 for 138 yards and two scores. The final preseason game, however, was a different story, as he was sacked five times and managed only 14 yards on three completions.
The Browns decided to start Gabriel, who was drafted in the third round after the team’s 1-3 start. Gabriel had seen limited action in blowout losses to the Baltimore Ravens and Detroit Lions, replacing Joe Flacco, who had thrown six interceptions against only two touchdowns.
Sanders remains Cleveland’s No. 3 quarterback behind Gabriel and Flacco. For now, the mimed interview continues to fuel the conversation about how players interact with the media, and it remains to be seen if it will affect his standing with the Browns or other teams in the future.
