Xavier Worthy Reveals How Chiefs Teammate Travis Kelce Changed His NFL Career

Xavier Worthy reflects on how Travis Kelce’s support through injury shaped his mindset and sparked a turning point early in his NFL journey.

A gut punch kicked off Xavier Worthy’s 2025 season. He dislocated his shoulder and had to leave the field after colliding with the Kansas City Chiefs’ tight end, Travis Kelce, on the third play of the game.

Xavier Worthy’s Shoulder Injury and How Travis Kelce Took Accountability

For a player whose game is built on speed and explosiveness, it felt like the worst possible beginning. But instead of letting that moment define him, Worthy found something else: a mentor in the very teammate at the heart of the accident.

Worthy admitted that the support he got from Kelce in the weeks that followed changed everything. Rather than brushing the injury off or keeping his distance, Kelce leaned in. He took accountability, voiced his frustration, and then poured his energy into lifting Worthy up.

That encouragement wasn’t just empty words. Kelce became Worthy’s biggest cheerleader during rehab, making sure the second-year receiver didn’t lose confidence in himself. On the New Heights podcast, Kelce even went out of his way to publicly call Worthy “one of our best players” and said he’s just a step away from being one of the best receivers in the league.

For a 22-year-old trying to carve out his place in the NFL, hearing that from a future Hall of Famer is about as powerful as it gets.

Worthy Speaks Up on Injury and How He Pushes Forward

Worthy himself admitted on The Rich Eisen Show how much that bond means.

“Me and Trav definitely talked about it. Trav is my guy and Trav knows it’s football. I never want to put it on Trav, so it’s always good to have someone like that in our corner.”

Beyond the hype, Worthy has been soaking in Kelce’s example. He’s watched how the veteran reads defenses, how he creates space, and how he carries himself as both a star and a teammate. That perspective shifted Worthy’s goals.

Coming back from injury, he didn’t just want to prove he was fast again. He wanted to be the best teammate he could be.

That growth showed in his Week 4 return, when Worthy exploded for 121 total yards against the Ravens. It was the performance Chiefs fans had been waiting for, but for Worthy, it was about more than the box score; it was proof that he’d fought through the lowest point of his young career with the help of someone who’s been there before.

For Worthy, the NFL already feels a little less overwhelming because of Kelce. And for the Chiefs, that bond might be the beginning of something special.
