CeeDee Lamb Injury Update

Lamb sustained his high ankle sprain during the first quarter of Dallas’ Week 3 loss to Chicago. The injury occurred on his first touch of the game when he got his ankle rolled up on during a tackle, forcing him to limp off the field in visible pain.

The injury initially looked severe, with Lamb spending the following week in a walking boot and missing all practice sessions. He was ruled out for last Sunday’s tie against Green Bay, unable to participate in any team activities.

However, encouraging news emerged ahead of Week 5. Lamb has shed the walking boot and was spotted at practice doing rehabilitation work on Wednesday. While he will officially be listed as DNP and almost certainly won’t play against the New York Jets, this represents significant progress in his recovery.

Head coach Brian Schottenheimer provided an optimistic update, stating that Lamb is “progressing well” but the team will “see how the week goes” before making decisions about his availability. The Cowboys’ decision not to place Lamb on injured reserve suggested they believed he could return before missing the mandatory four games that IR placement would require.

Based on his current trajectory, Week 6 certainly seems within reach for Lamb’s return. The latest he would likely be sidelined appears to be Week 7, making his absence shorter than initially feared when the injury first occurred.

The Cowboys have been taking a cautious approach with their franchise receiver, prioritizing long-term health over rushing him back prematurely. High ankle sprains typically require three to six weeks of recovery time, and Dallas appears comfortable allowing Lamb that full healing period.

Fantasy managers should expect Lamb to remain out for this week’s game against New York, but his progress this week provides genuine optimism for a return in the coming weeks.

Lamb Fantasy Outlook

When healthy, Lamb remains the clear WR1 for Dallas and one of the most reliable fantasy assets at the position. Through his first two games before the injury, he posted monster performances with seven catches for 110 yards in Week 1 and nine catches for 112 yards in Week 2.

Those early-season performances demonstrated that Lamb was on pace for another elite campaign. His 18.0 and 20.2 fantasy point totals in the first two weeks established him as a must-start option when available.

During Lamb’s absence, George Pickens has stepped up admirably as the team’s primary receiving threat. In last week’s tie against Green Bay, Pickens delivered eight catches for 134 yards and two touchdowns, his best performance since joining Dallas.

Pickens has been productive throughout the season, totaling 21 receptions for 300 yards and four touchdowns through four games. He has a touchdown catch in each of the past three games and has established himself as a legitimate fantasy starter.

When Lamb returns, he will immediately reclaim his role as the Cowboys’ primary receiver, but Pickens should continue to see significant targets. The Cowboys’ historically poor defense means the team will likely find itself in plenty of high-scoring contests that can support multiple fantasy-relevant receivers.

Dallas currently ranks as the worst defense in the league, virtually guaranteeing that they’ll be involved in shootouts throughout the season. This game script benefits both receivers and creates an environment where Lamb can immediately return to top-five WR status upon his comeback.

Fantasy managers who have held onto Lamb during his injury should be rewarded with an elite option for the stretch run. His return timeline puts him back in lineups right as the fantasy playoffs approach, potentially making him a league-winning asset for patient managers.
