As the New York Jets search for their first victory of the season on the road against a divisional rival in the Miami Dolphins, the first half has gone about as badly as the team could have anticipated. Two lost fumbles have killed any momentum the offense might have had, while Miami has had its way with them, putting up 10 points with little to no resistance from their defense.
It’s the offense, though, which remains a major hurdle for head coach Aaron Glenn to overcome. After taking a swing at Justin Fields as the quarterback, the offensive unit hasn’t found its groove so far this year. That has reflected in the numbers as well, with superstar wide receivers like Garrett Wilson taking a major hit.
What Happened to Garrett Wilson?
Coming into the game with no real issues bothering him, Wilson had a forgettable first half. Despite leading the team in receiving yards, it wasn’t like his numbers were individually excellent.
Through two quarters, he had just two receptions for 19 yards, as the Jets scored just three points in the first half. The production, or lack thereof, wasn’t entirely on the wideout, as the passing game as a whole struggled to get going.

At halftime, the offense as a whole had just 54 yards through the air, with Wilson accounting for more than 1/3rd of the total amount. For a team that has already fumbled and lost the ball twice, perhaps a switch to a more pass-heavy attack may be the answer in the second half.
Both offenses picked up in the second half. While Miami added two touchdowns in the quarter, New York also scored 10 points. Trying to balance their attack, the Jets put an emphasis on the passing game.
Fields added 63 more yards through the air with Wilson accounting for 18 of those on a single reception, as he nearly doubled his first-half total to 37 receiving yards on three catches and four targets.
As the game seemed to be getting out of hand at Miami built a 27-13 lead, the Jets were forced to switch to a more pass-heavy approach in the fourth quarter. By that time, it was too late to change the result, as the Dolphins pulled away for a 27-21 victory.
However, the reliance on Fields’ arm did offer a boost to the offense as a whole. He nearly doubled his passing yards in one quarter, finishing the night with 226 yards and a touchdown.
That uptick was greatly supported by Wilson, who added another 45 yards to his tally, including the lone receiving touchdown of the game for New York. As the game clock struck 00:00, he had 82 yards and a touchdown on six receptions while being targeted eight times.
