The Florida Gators are preparing for a high-powered SEC showdown against Steve Sarkisian’s No. 9 Texas Longhorns this Saturday, a game selected by the SEC Nation crew for their Week 6 broadcast. Florida, coming off a bye, enters the matchup with a 1-3 record and few realistic opportunities remaining to secure wins in 2025.
There have been some questions raised about whether the Gators can overcome recent struggles, particularly given quarterback DJ Lagway’s inconsistent performances. However, Florida’s defense has shown some competence, potentially keeping the game within reach.
Despite a 1-3 start to the season, Florida’s worst since 1986, Napier hopes to lean on that past magic to spark an upset against Texas.
HC Billy Napier Stands Firm on Play-Calling
A central storyline heading into the Longhorns matchup revolves around Napier’s role as play caller. With Florida’s offense struggling, many have suggested he hand over duties to an offensive coordinator to focus on broader head coaching responsibilities.
Napier, however, remains resolute, explaining why he continues to call plays himself.
“It’s year 8 for me and I think it’s the way that we’ve done it. It helped us get here. There’s a lot of guys that are still doing it, too… you’re always evaluating what’s best for this team,” Napier said during his Monday press conference.
Billy Napier asked what gives him conviction to remain UF’s playcaller:

His comments reflect a commitment to his approach and a belief that his direct involvement could help turn around a floundering season. They also certainly underscore the pressure he faces in guiding a team in crisis while maintaining his job security.
QB DJ Lagway’s Key Role Against Arch Manning’s Texas
Quarterback Lagway enters this critical contest with two strengths already evident in his game: Touch and pocket presence. Napier emphasized the importance of building an environment where Lagway can regain his rhythm.
“Seeing a look into his eye, I think that’s important. I think that’s ultimately, I’m trying to get, oh we’re trying to do our best for him in terms of creating an environment where he can continue to get back in his rhythm,” Napier said, highlighting the need for leadership and confidence on the field.
Billy Napier just noted he’s seeing “a look in (DJ Lagway’s) eye” during practice leading up to Texas.

Florida and Texas have only met four times in history, with the Longhorns holding a 3-0-1 series advantage. The most recent contest, a 49-17 Texas victory in Austin on November 9, 2024, is a stark reminder of the Gators’ challenge. Prior to that, the only game played in Gainesville came in 1940, resulting in a 26-0 loss for Florida.

Texas enters the Swamp on a three-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 120-17 since their Week 1 defeat to Ohio State. Their star field general, Arch Manning, has flourished this season, totaling 888 passing yards with nine touchdowns and adding 123 rushing yards and five rushing scores.
For the Gators, this matchup represents a chance to defy expectations, revive their season, and validate Napier’s decision to retain play-calling duties. The kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, October 4, 2025, and it will be televised live on ESPN.
