On the tennis side of things, Nadal, who turned professional in 2001, retired from the sport in November 2024. He is regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, having won 22 singles Grand Slam titles, including 14 at the French Open, four at the US Open, and two each at the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
During his career, the Spaniard has been ranked world No. 1 in the ATP rankings, won a couple of Olympic gold medals for his country, among many other accolades.
Nadal Expressed Gratitude to Sister Maribel and Family During His Retirement Announcement
In 2024, Nadal shared an emotional video on his social media, announcing his retirement from tennis after more than 20 years in the sport. In the video, the Spaniard expressed his gratitude to his family for their love and support. He thanked his mother, Ana, for her “sacrifices,” and his wife, Maria Francisca Perelló, for standing by his side.
“My family is everything to me. My mother, I think she has made all the sacrifices she had to make so that we could always have everything. My wife, Mery – we’ve been together for 19 years. Thank you for everything you have done,” Nadal said.
Nadal also mentioned that the birth of his elder son in 2022 inspired him to continue playing for a little longer. He talked about his sister, Maribel, and stated that they have always had an “incredible relationship.”
The Spaniard also expressed appreciation for his uncle Toni, who had been his coach, and thanked his father Sebastián for being a source of “inspiration” throughout his career.
“To come home and see how my son is growing every day has been a force that has really kept me alive and with the necessary energy to continue. My sister, I think we have always had an incredible relationship. My uncle, who is the reason I started playing tennis. And my father, who I believe, has been a source of inspiration for me in every sense of the word. I think he has been an example of effort,” he added.
Nadal concluded his professional career by representing Spain in the 2024 Davis Cup Finals.
