Denis Shapovalov’s wife, Swedish tennis player Mirjam Björklund, announced her retirement from the sport just days after their wedding. The couple began dating in 2019 and got engaged in July 2023. On Sept. 9, 2025, Shapovalov and Björklund held a destination wedding in Zakynthos, Greece, with only 30 of their closest family and friends in attendance.
Björklund, who turned professional in 2017, retired after playing the sport for eight years. She made her Grand Slam main draw debut in 2022 and achieved her biggest career title at the 2023 Ilkley Trophy, where she defeated Emma Navarro in the final.
What Did Denis Shapovalov’s Wife Mirjam Björklund Say About Her Retirement?
In a recent interview with Expressen after her wedding to Shapovalov, Björklund announced her retirement from tennis. She expressed that although she didn’t reach the top rankings, she experienced a lot in her career.
“Yes, I have put the racket on the shelf. I feel like I have achieved and experienced so much in my career, even though I did not reach the ranking that many people think is ‘the only thing that matters,’ which is often top-10, top-50 or something like that,” Björklund said [translated from Swedish].
Björklund explained that she decided to retire from tennis to pursue her dreams, visions, and passions outside of the sport. She was also reported to join Shapovalov’s team and accompany him on the Tour.
“I have qualified for grand slams on all surfaces, played against the world number two at Wimbledon, represented Sweden from junior to senior, beat top-30 players and so much more fun. I have my own dreams and visions and other passions that I’m excited to try out. But we’ll get to that in a little while when it feels calm and I’ve landed in my new role, so to speak,” she added.
Before his wedding, Shapovalov competed at the 2025 US Open, where he defeated Márton Fucsovics and Valentin Royer in the first and second rounds, respectively, before losing to eventual runner-up Jannik Sinner.
Since getting married, the Canadian has begun his run in the Asian swing of the Tour. He competed at the 2025 Japan Open and lost to Daniel Altmaier in his opening match.

Last year, the Canadian secured his place in the main draw of the Shanghai Masters by winning his matches in the qualifiers. He defeated Hsu Yu-hsiou and Sho Shimabukuro in the first and second qualifying rounds, respectively, to advance to the main draw.
In the main draw, Shapovalov triumphed over Lorenzo Sonego in the first round before being eliminated in the second round by Ben Shelton.
