Is Jonnu Smith Playing in Week 4? Latest on Steelers TE’s Status for Game vs. Vikings

Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Jonnu Smith was held out of practice on Friday, leaving his availability against the Vikings in Dublin in doubt.

After the Pittsburgh Steelers signed Aaron Rodgers, they went to work on adding another piece to their offense to give him more options in the seam and underneath. They already had DK Metcalf on the outside, shipped George Pickens off to Dallas for draft picks, and had the reliable Pat Freiermuth at tight end. However, they knew they’d need another reliable playmaker.

Enter Jonnu Smith. On June 30, 2025, the Steelers executed a blockbuster trade with the Miami Dolphins, bringing cornerback Jalen Ramsey, Smith, and a 2027 seventh-round pick in exchange for defensive back Minkah Fitzpatrick and a 2027 fifth-round pick. It didn’t hurt that Smith has a working relationship with Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith from their days with the Atlanta Falcons.

Will Jonnu Smith Play in Week 4 Against the Minnesota Vikings?

Smith was listed as a limited participant on the Steelers’ injury report on Friday and is questionable for the game. He’s nursing a sore hip, and the Steelers are likely just being cautious with the nine-year veteran.

Smith’s usage has been limited so far in 2025. Through the first three weeks, he’s only seen 13 targets, but he’s caught 12 passes for 65 yards and a touchdown.

The Steelers traveled to Dublin, Ireland, to take on the Minnesota Vikings for the NFL’s 50th international matchup and the second overseas game of the year. They’ll face off in Croke Park, Ireland’s “Cathedral of Sport,” home to the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1891, and for the annual All-Ireland finals in Gaelic football.

It’s been 12 years since the Steelers played overseas. The Steelers and Vikings enter the game with identical 2-1 records and are locked in tight divisional races.

The Steelers’ offense has been among the worst in the NFL, ranking 30th in total yards. Rodgers has completed 56 of 86 passes for 586 yards, seven touchdowns, and three interceptions this season.

The Steelers’ usually strong running game has been a flop thus far. Jaylen Warren has 132 yards on 43 carries with no touchdowns, while Kenneth Gainwell has only 16 carries for 55 yards and one rushing touchdown. Highly touted draft pick Kaleb Johnson has been relegated to the bench after a costly special teams mistake.

Minnesota’s starting quarterback, J.J. McCarthy, is out with an ankle injury. In his place goes one-time MVP candidate and journeyman Carson Wentz, who signed as the backup late in the preseason. Wentz had a strong outing in Minnesota’s 48-10 thrashing of the Cincinnati Bengals, completing 14 of 20 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

The Vikings and Steelers kick off Sunday at 9:30 a.m. ET on NFL Network.
