Duke’s Nikolas Khamenia opened up to teammate Cayden Boozer about his decision to join the Blue Devils.
The five-star recruit from Harvard-Westlake explained why culture mattered more than prestige when choosing his college destination.
Khamenia Values Duke’s Culture Over Everything Else
During a recent conversation, Khamenia was asked directly about his college choice. “Why you chose Duke out of every school in the country, why you chose to be here?”
Khamenia’s response was quite clear. “You know, to be honest, I think it’s really just the culture,” he said. “You look at all the players that have come here and have been successful, not because of, you know, the things that I would say would come with Duke. I would say it’s more of, like, the people that are at Duke. If that makes sense.”
He later explained, going deeper into his reasoning, how Duke transforms good players into great ones through its environment and relationships.
“This is how I would put it. Duke creates successful people,” Khamenia explained. “Most of the time you can come in really good, but I think Duke takes you to another level that you haven’t seen. And that’s what I’ve personally been through just a couple of months here. I’ve gotten stronger, faster.”
He emphasized how being around quality teammates like Boozer has helped his development. “I’ve become a better basketball player just because I’m around good basketball players like yourself… And that just helps me grow,” he said to his teammate.
The McDonald’s All-American also pointed to Duke’s winning tradition as motivation. “You look at these banners, you know. You look at the national championships. And that’s something that we strive for every day. And I just think having that mentality just takes you to another level. And that’s why I came here,” he noted.
Khamenia committed to Duke in October 2024, choosing the Blue Devils over UCLA and Gonzaga. He is ranked as the No. 15 overall player in the 2025 class by ESPN and holds a composite ranking of 0.9922 by 247Sports. His commitment helped Duke secure the nation’s top recruiting class for 2025.
The forward has already proven himself on the international stage. He averaged 9.7 points and 3.3 rebounds at the 2025 FIBA U19 World Cup and earned MVP honors at the 2024 FIBA 3×3 U18 World Cup.
Khamenia joins a loaded Duke freshman class that includes five-star twins Cameron and Cayden Boozer, along with Sebastian Wilkins. Cameron ranks No. 3 overall in the class, while Cayden sits at No. 16 on ESPN’s ranking.
For Khamenia, the decision came down to one simple factor. He noted that his choice ultimately centered on Duke’s culture.
