Sooner Nation in Shock as Fan Pulls Off Unthinkable Loyalty Act for John Mateer Amid Recent Surgery

One Oklahoma Sooners fan is making headlines for a thank you gift he dropped off for quarterback John Mateer's hand surgeon, Dr. Steven Shin.

In the midst of Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer having a broken bone in his right hand, one Sooners fan made the ultimate gesture to the surgeon responsible behind the resulting hand operation.

After hurting his throwing hand in last weekend’s first quarter and eventual 24-17 win over Auburn, Mateer had a procedure this week in order to hopefully be back on the field sooner rather than later. Esteemed Dr. Steven Shin, MD, of Cedars-Sinai Orthopaedics performed the surgery, which has been deemed a success.

However, one Sooners fan went above and beyond to express his gratitude to Dr. Shin for potentially getting the Heisman hopeful back in action.

Fans React to Oklahoma Sooners Fan Showing Up At Cedars-Sinai for John Mateer

Oklahoma fan Carson Grane showed up on Wednesday at the Los Angeles hospital where Mateer’s surgery would be taking place. He dropped off an Oklahoma flag for Dr. Shin at the surgeon’s office.

With it now being official that all went well with Mateer’s surgery, fellow Sooners fans have since chimed in on Grane’s dedication.

“Bro dropped his stats. Respect,” said on fan on X.

“TMZ got nothing on you,” another said.

Dr. Shin is the Executive Vice Chair of the Department of Orthopaedics and is also the Director of Clinical Operations at Cedars-Sinai.

He is considered among the best hand surgeons in the world.

“Let us know if you get a thank you note,” another fan said to Grane.

“Completely UNHINGED and also hilarious. Well done,” said another.

Mateer is a junior who has thrown for 4,621 yards and 38 touchdowns in addition to rushing for 23 TDs with 1,167 yards on the ground throughout his career.

A Texas native, Mateer was already on a solid pace for the year before his surgery; he had already thrown 1,215 yards in addition to six touchdowns. He had also already rushed for five additional TDs.

“Nothing short of [a] Pulitzer [prize],” said on fan of Grane’s gift and visit which he captured on camera and shared with fans.

The Sooners are currently 4–0 and ranked No. 7 in the nation; the Sooners will host Kent State on Oct. 4 before a much-anticipated showdown with Texas.

Oklahoma will start sophomore Michael Hawkins Jr. against Kent State as Mateer recovers.
