With Duke fans flooding Tahaad Pettiford’s social media asking him to enter the transfer portal, new Auburn head coach Steven Pearl is doubling down on his sophomore point guard as the centerpiece of his rebuild.
What Role Will Tahaad Pettiford Play Under Steven Pearl?
In a press conference uploaded on ABC 33/40’s YouTube channel, Steven outlined Tahaad Pettiford’s expanded role. The 38-year-old coach expects his sophomore guard to lead Auburn’s transition with 10 new players joining the roster.
“Tahaad obviously [has] a ton of experience, an understanding of what we’re doing offensively and defensively. Tahaad has a voice that a lot of people will listen to, and he’s going to be a really important figure in this group,” Steven said.
Steven warned that increased responsibility brings heightened scrutiny for Pettiford, who averaged 11.6 points and 3.0 assists as Auburn’s sixth man last season and will now be the primary focus of opposing defenses.
“He’s got to understand that he’s gonna have a target on his back this year. He’s going to be the center of everyone’s scouting report. I know that he’s excited about that opportunity. He’s ready for that opportunity,” he said.
The coach framed the coaching change as a proving ground for Pettiford’s NBA aspirations.
After his freshman campaign, the point guard had earned an invite to the 2025 NBA Combine but withdrew from the draft, believing he could be selected much higher this year with a strong sophomore performance leading Auburn through significant roster turnover.
That bet on himself becomes even more significant given Auburn’s current uncertainty. Bruce Pearl’s retirement triggered a 30-day transfer portal window for Auburn players, yet Pettiford has remained committed to the Tigers despite outside pressure.
Steven thinks leading a rebuilt roster will show NBA scouts what Pettiford can do. Auburn lost a few players this season, making the sophomores’ leadership even more important.
“What an unbelievable chance for Tahaad to show how he handles adversity like this,” Steven said. “He’s going to be able to show all these NBA GMs what he’s really made of, to be able to lead a team of 10 new guys in spite of a Hall of Fame coach stepping down before the season.”
The first-year head coach recognizes the challenge ahead but remains confident in his point guard. Despite the pressure of leading 10 new teammates, Steven believes Pettiford has the tools to succeed.
“It’s going to be a lot for him, but it’s an opportunity that I know that he can rise to and I know that he’s going to take advantage of,” Steven concluded. The sophomore enters the season as the Tigers’ most experienced backcourt option.
Following Bruce’s retirement, Steven inherits a program that has won five conference titles in six years but must integrate extensive roster changes. With SEC championship expectations remaining high, Pettiford becomes the key to Auburn’s continued success under new leadership.
