Jayden Daniels Injury Update: Will Fantasy Managers Get the Commanders QB1 Back in Week 4?

Jayden Daniels missed last week's game with a knee injury. Will fantasy managers be able to start the Commanders QB1 in Week 4?

The Washington Commanders are coming off a dominant victory over the Las Vegas Raiders, but the biggest question heading into their Week 4 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons remains whether their franchise quarterback will be available. Jayden Daniels has been sidelined with a knee injury that forced him to miss last week’s contest. For fantasy football managers counting on the dual-threat quarterback, what is the latest on his status?

Jayden Daniels Injury Update

After not missing a single game during his entire rookie campaign, Daniels is now dealing with a knee sprain. The issue kept him sidelined during the Commanders’ 41-24 win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday. On Monday, Washington’s head coach, Dan Quinn, provided an update on Daniels’ recovery timeline.

According to Adam Schefter, “Commanders HC Dan Quinn said QB Jayden Daniels remains day-to-day due to his knee sprain…Marcus Mariota playing well Sunday also buys time for Commanders and doesn’t force them to rush back Daniels before he’s ready.”

Daniels suffered the injury during the Commanders’ Thursday night loss to the Green Bay Packers in Week 2. The knee sprain has now cost him one full game, with uncertainty surrounding his Week 4 availability against his former coach’s team in Atlanta.

Mariota could not have done a better job filling in for Daniels. With the starter sidelined, Mariota, a former No. 2 overall draft pick, stepped in seamlessly. He went 15-for-21 through the air, accumulating 207 yards and a 43-yard touchdown strike to Luke McCaffery with 2:05 left in the game.

Daniels’ injury is not considered serious, but the team is undoubtedly going to be cautious with their franchise quarterback. After all, it was a lack of caution with a knee injury that essentially derailed Robert Griffin III’s career in the mid-2010s, a lesson the Commanders organization surely remembers.

Given his importance to the team’s future, the Commanders will be careful with how quickly they bring him back, a wise move if they want the best chance at long-term success. The fact that Quinn continues to label Daniels as “day-to-day” suggests the injury isn’t severe enough to warrant a longer-term designation.

This week got off to a good start with Daniels practicing on Wednesday in a limited capacity.

Daniels is probably healthy enough to play this week if necessary. If it were a playoff game or a contest at the end of the season with huge implications, he’d probably be out there. However, given how early it is in the season and how effective the team was with Mariota, the Commanders may opt to play it safe and hold Daniels out one more week.

But if Daniels looks good in practice and gets clearance from the medical staff, there’s no reason he wouldn’t be back on the field after just one game missed.

Thursday Update: Daniels practiced in a limited capacity again on Thursday. It’s a positive sign, but he is still not out of the woods yet. The Commanders have been cautious with their franchise QB and will not put him on the field unless they are confident in his health. He is likely headed toward a questionable designation.

Friday Update: Daniels did not practice at all on Friday, representing a downgrade from his limited sessions the previous two days. Perhaps his knee did not respond as well as expected. He is out this week. Marcus Mariota will start.

Daniels Fantasy Outlook

Daniels was a revelation as a rookie after being selected with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. His performance earned him the Associated Press Offensive Rookie of the Year award as he led the Commanders to a 12-5 record in the 2024 season, posting 3,568 passing yards, 25 touchdown throws, and nine interceptions. As a true dual-threat, he also rushed for 891 yards and six touchdowns on 148 carries.

That rushing total broke the record for the most yards by a rookie quarterback. Additionally, Daniels joined the aforementioned Griffin (2012) and Kirk Cousins (2016) as the only Washington signal-callers to be named to the Pro Bowl since the turn of the century.

So far this season, Daniels has completed 43 of 72 passes for 433 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions. He has also carried the ball 18 times for 85 yards and three first downs, maintaining the dual-threat ability that makes him so valuable in fantasy formats.

Last season, Quinn and Daniels led the Commanders to their first NFC Championship game appearance since 1991. Although they lost to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles, they established themselves as a legitimate contender. Reflecting his impact, Daniels was ranked as the No. 21 player on the NFL’s Top 100 list last month.

Fantasy managers should feel reasonably confident in getting Daniels back in Week 5. But for Week 4, they should prepare to find a replacement once again. The combination of the team’s cautious approach and Mariota’s excellent performance creates a scenario where Washington has no urgency to rush their franchise player back.

For as long as Mariota is starting, he will be a viable streaming option for fantasy managers. His veteran presence and ability to manage the game effectively make him a reasonable short-term solution while Daniels recovers fully.

The silver lining for Daniels’ fantasy outlook is that this appears to be a minor setback rather than a long-term concern. When he does return, likely in Week 5, he should resume his role as an elite QB1 option with both passing and rushing upside.
