Florida Urged to Make $34M Move to Replace Billy Napier as DJ Lagway Fails Rescue Job

Florida’s 1-3 start raises questions about Billy Napier’s future as DJ Lagway struggles and analysts debate if a coaching change is looming.

Florida’s rough 1-3 start has sparked louder calls for change, with head coach Billy Napier facing increasing scrutiny. Quarterback DJ Lagway, once seen as the program’s spark, has struggled to steady the Gators, intensifying doubts about the team’s direction.

With expectations high and results lagging, Napier’s seat is described as “getting hotter by the day,” leaving Florida at a crossroads over whether to move on from its $34 million head coach.

Pressure Mounts on Napier After 1-3 Start, Lagway Setbacks

Florida’s 1-3 start has pushed head coach Billy Napier into the center of scrutiny, with both fans and analysts questioning whether he has squandered his last chance to stabilize the program.

ESPN’s Rece Davis said on College GameDay that if he were in charge of a powerhouse looking to win immediately, he would “go try to pry Curt Cignetti out of Bloomington, Indiana.” Davis acknowledged age could be a concern but dismissed it, saying, “I don’t care how old he is. I would go and try to hire that guy and say, ‘Okay, let’s get this fixed.'”

Davis pointed out that Curt Cignetti is “64, 65, somewhere in there,” but emphasized that five strong years would be worth the investment. “If I get 10, great. But I’m going to take a great five and then we’ll figure it out after the five,” he said.

The cost would not be small. Napier’s buyout is estimated at $21 million, and Cignetti’s contract carries a $13 million price tag, meaning a $34 million decision looms if Florida makes a change.

Davis described Cignetti’s turnaround at Indiana as “historically good results, generationally going against generations of bad football,” and suggested his success could translate smoothly to a major SEC program.

While speculation about a coaching change grows, Napier’s most glaring problem has been his offense. Quarterback DJ Lagway was expected to provide a lift, but he has struggled with consistency and turnovers.

“DJ Lagway is very talented, and they played a really good defense at Miami, but this is not going to be good enough at this point of Billy Napier’s tenure,” Bruce Feldman said on his podcast, “The Audible.”

Through four games, Lagway has completed 83 of 123 passes for 690 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. His 67.5 percent completion rate highlights accuracy, yet the turnovers have crippled the offense.

The struggles have been amplified in marquee matchups. Against LSU, Lagway threw five interceptions, and in the loss to Miami, he was limited to 61 passing yards. On the ground, he has just 23 yards on 26 carries, eliminating a key dimension of Florida’s attack.

Lagway’s inexperience has shown in critical moments, leaving questions about whether coaching stunts his growth.

Regardless, the Gators’ schedule doesn’t get any easier from here. This Saturday, Florida is on a bye. After that, they have games with No. 10 Texas, No. 9 Texas A&M, Mississippi State, No. 5 Georgia, Kentucky, No. 13 Ole Miss, No. 15 Tennessee, and a regular-season finale against No. 8 Florida State.
