Insider Reveals How Close Quinn Hughes Really Is to Walking Out on the Vancouver Canucks

The Vancouver Canucks are facing a storm of speculation surrounding their captain, Quinn Hughes. With two years left on his current deal, the 25-year-old defenseman has become the center of trade chatter and long-term uncertainty. Insiders suggest his patience may be running out as the team struggles to prove it can compete.

Can the Vancouver Canucks Convince Quinn Hughes to Stay?

Hughes has been clear about one thing: winning matters most. After another season without playoff hockey, questions about his future in Vancouver have grown louder. Reports claim Hughes is weighing his options, with the possibility of leaving once his contract expires in 2027.

Blake Price, a longtime analyst, summed up the sentiment on Sportsnet, asking how long a player should be expected to give before prioritizing his own career.

“How many years can a player be expected to give to the team that drafted, developed, and paid him before the player is quote-unquote allowed to say, ‘I need to do something for me now”? It feels like Quinn Hughes is at that spot,'” Price said.

He suggested Hughes is already at that stage, warning that being “close” to success isn’t enough.

“And if the Vancouver Canucks aren’t going to be at that spot where he is in his career at his age, he’s going to go somewhere else. And I don’t think close is enough. Close is a miss,” he added.

For fans in Vancouver, those words struck a nerve.

Canucks President Steps In to Cool Quinn Hughes Rumors

Team president Jim Rutherford addressed the speculation and downplayed the idea of imminent change, stressing that Hughes remains committed for now. Rutherford admitted the rumors are unavoidable but emphasized that only Hughes can ultimately decide his future.

“You can spin this thing 100 different ways,” Rutherford told The Athletic, “but there’s only one guy that will make that decision.” He noted that general manager Patrik Allvin is focused on building a stronger roster, which he hopes will keep Hughes in place long-term.

The defenseman’s production speaks for itself. Hughes recorded 76 points last season, leading the team and ranking among the NHL’s best blueliners.

That level of play makes him not only the face of the Canucks but also one of the most valuable players in the league. Losing him would be a major setback.

Adding fuel to the speculation is the family angle. Both Jack and Luke Hughes play for the New Jersey Devils, and the idea of the three brothers uniting has lingered for years. Jack Hughes even admitted during the NHL Player Media Tour that he would “love” to play with Quinn someday.

When asked, Quinn said he had no problem with that statement, furthering the buzz.

Insider Rick Dhaliwal recently claimed most around the league don’t expect Hughes to re-sign in Vancouver. He pointed out that players often work hard to reach unrestricted free agency, and Hughes will have that opportunity in two years.

Elliotte Friedman echoed the sentiment, saying the captain is firmly in what he calls the “uncertainty zone.”

Hughes has not issued ultimatums, but his comments suggest performance will dictate his choice. If the Canucks fail to progress, his departure could become a reality. On the other hand, a successful season might convince him to stay.
