Florida Predicted to Pull the Plug on Billy Napier as DJ Lagway ‘Not Good Enough’ to Rescue HC

Florida coach Billy Napier faces mounting pressure as Gators struggle to a 1-3 start. College football insider predicts major changes ahead.

Florida’s 1-3 start has turned up the heat on head coach Billy Napier, and his seat is getting hotter by the day. With quarterback DJ Lagway’s struggles mounting, prominent media analyst Bruce Feldman is predicting that the Gators will soon begin their search for a new coach, suggesting a change could happen before the season even ends.

Why Does Bruce Feldman Think Florida Will Fire Billy Napier Soon?

On his YouTube podcast, “The Audible,” college football insider Bruce Feldman broke down Napier’s precarious future with the Gators. He believes the university’s administration might pull the plug before Napier has a chance to salvage his job with a late-season winning streak.

“I think Florida is going to be in the midst of a coaching search, probably not too far down the road,” Feldman said. “Sometimes with coaches on the hot seat, what ends up happening is the administration will yank the plug out of the wall because they don’t want somebody coaching their way back.”

A major source of Napier’s troubles has been his offense. Lagway’s issues with turnovers have crippled the Gators’ ability to score consistently, intensifying the pressure on the head coach.

“DJ Lagway is very talented and they played a really good defense at Miami, but this is not going to be good enough at this point of Billy Napier’s tenure,” Feldman explained.

He drew a sharp contrast between this season and the 2024 campaign. Last year, athletic director Scott Stricklin was also feeling the pressure, but his job security improved significantly after basketball coach Todd Golden’s success and a strong finish by the football team.

“This time last year, Stricklin was really attached to Napier and was also under a lot of pressure and on the hot seat himself,” Feldman noted. “Then two things changed: Napier helped get him off the hot seat with their second-half run, and Todd Golden won a national title. Stricklin got an extension and he’s not in jeopardy like he was before.”

Looking ahead, Feldman cited Florida’s brutal upcoming schedule as another factor working against Napier. After already suffering losses to South Florida, LSU, and Miami, the path for the embattled coach to save his job appears increasingly narrow.

How Have DJ Lagway’s Struggles Worsened the Situation for Napier?

Through the first four games, Lagway has completed 83 of 123 passes for 690 yards with five touchdowns and six interceptions. While his 67.5% completion rate demonstrates accuracy, the turnovers have been devastating in key moments.

The sophomore quarterback’s performance has been particularly concerning in big games. He threw five interceptions against LSU and was held to just 61 passing yards in the loss to Miami. His rushing production has also been minimal, with only 23 yards on 26 carries, which severely limits Florida’s offensive versatility.

This inconsistent play has led many fans to question if poor coaching is hindering their quarterback’s development. The Gators’ inability to put up points, especially when compared to other SEC teams, has only fueled frustration with Napier, particularly in close losses.

While Lagway signed a high-profile NIL deal with Jordan Brand and remains a valuable asset in recruiting, his on-field performance has not delivered the spark needed to get Napier off the hot seat. His inexperience has been especially evident in crucial road games.

Ultimately, Napier needs a strong showing against tough upcoming opponents to have any chance of saving his job. However, Feldman’s analysis suggests that Florida’s administration has already run out of patience and may not wait to see if things improve.
