What Happened to San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa?

Bosa was seen limping off the field towards the end of the first quarter as the Cardinals were set to punt back to the 49ers. Once he got to the 49ers’ sideline, he fell to the ground and laid down. Bosa has continued to be a dominant presence on San Francisco’s defense, with a sack in the first two games of the season.

He could get up on his own, but he was seen looking in the stands and giving someone a thumbs-down signal as he limped off the field and made his way towards the locker room.

San Francisco confirmed fans’ worst fears when it officially announced that Bosa was questionable with a knee injury. He was later ruled out of the rest of the game. The 49ers’ defense has been taking countless hits during the first three weeks of the season, and a major injury to Bosa would be devastating.

49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on Bosa’s injury after the game. “We can’t rule anything out,” he said. “They checked for ACL and stuff there. He’s good with that, but we’re still not sure.”

The situation took an even worse turn when the 49ers lost offseason addition Mykel Williams, who also went to the locker room with an injury and is questionable to return. According to PFSN’s EDGE Impact metric, Bosa was the highest-ranked edge rusher with a grade of 99.9.

He has started the season off hot, having the second-most total tackles on the 49ers defense through the first two weeks. He’s also paired his two sacks with four tackles for loss, continuing to show his dominance on the line of scrimmage. However, depending on its severity, a knee injury could really dampen his quick start.

Bosa’s gesture to the stands did not seem great regarding how his knee felt, and fans will wait to hear more from the 49ers in the coming week.
