Carlos Alcaraz Explains Why He Lost to Taylor Fritz at Laver Cup After Feeling ‘Extra Pressure’

Carlos Alcaraz spoke about his defeat to Taylor Fritz at the Laver Cup.

Carlos Alcaraz faced a rare reversal at the 2025 Laver Cup, falling to Taylor Fritz in straight sets on Saturday evening. The World No. 1 entered his first singles match since the US Open riding an impressive winning streak, but was unable to overcome the American’s aggressive start.

In the post–match press conference, Alcaraz reflected on the key moments and admitted the pressure of the day’s scoreboard weighed on his performance.

What Did Carlos Alcaraz Say After His Laver Cup Loss to Taylor Fritz?

Alcaraz had a 3-0 head-to-head record against Fritz coming into their Laver Cup match. But the American turned tide in his favour on Saturday night as he beat the Spaniard in straight sets to secure a crucial win for Team World.

During his post-match interview, Alcaraz conceded that Fritz’s early dominance shaped the outcome.

“I feel like he was more on the court than me. I think that the first or second shot of the rally was really important, and I think he did it much better than I did. I think that was the key, because as I said, in these conditions, I think the first shots are really important.” Alcaraz said.

“When you are defending, when you are running on the court, it is really difficult to turn around the situations. Turning to attack is really difficult because of the balls and the conditions that are really slow,” he added.

The Spaniard admitted the day’s earlier losses for Team Europe amplified the stakes, stating:

“I feel like I had to win the point, because the way that the day is going, so with the two losses, I feel like, ‘Okay, I had to win my match.’ It was a little bit of extra pressure, because of the way that the day was going on, but it wasn’t because I’m the No. 1 in the world.

Emphasizing that ranking should not dictate expectations, Alcaraz added:

“The ranking is just a number. It shouldn’t give you the pressure that you have to win everything and every match.”

Fritz delivered a commanding 6–3, 6–2 victory in just 72 minutes, finishing with 17 winners and five aces. His aggressive baseline play disrupted Alcaraz’s rhythm and helped Team World turn a 1-3 deficit into a 7–3 lead after seven matches. Fritz’s triumph also marked his first victory against a reigning world No. 1.

For Alcaraz, this defeat was the seventh of his 2025 campaign and his first since falling to Jannik Sinner in the Wimbledon final over two months ago. The world No. 1 had also secured his second French Open and second US Open titles this year.

With Team World leading 9–3 after Saturday’s doubles match, Europe will need to win all four Sunday contests, or at least three to force a tiebreaking doubles set, to retain the Laver Cup. Each match on the final day is worth three points, and the first team to reach 13 points will claim the trophy.
