The Minnesota Vikings are heading into Week 3 with a long list of injuries. Following an impressive Week 1 27-24 comeback win against the Chicago Bears, the Vikings struggled against the Atlanta Falcons. The game was completely one-sided, the Vikings losing 22-6.
The biggest problem, however, was losing veteran running back Aaron Jones Sr. to injury.
What Happened to Vikings RB Aaron Jones Sr.?
Jones was a standout performer during the Vikings’ season opener. He finished with 23 rushing yards, 44 receiving yards, and a touchdown, easily a key player for their upcoming matchups.
However, Jones suffered a hamstring injury during the second quarter of their Week 2 game against Atlanta. He didn’t return for the second half and was officially placed on the injury reserve (IR) on Tuesday.
“Aaron Jones has a hamstring injury and his return is questionable,” Kevin Seifert of ESPN reported on X (formerly known as Twitter).
In a detailed report, NFL insider Adam Schefter revealed that Jones might be gone for longer than expected:
“Source: Vikings placed RB Aaron Jones on injured reserve due to his hamstring injury. He’s now out a minimum of four weeks.”
That being said, Schefter’s report doesn’t confirm a comeback for Week 7.
Jones has signed a two-year extension with the Vikings, making him the central piece in the team’s future plans. Jones is not only a capable player but also meant to be a reliable veteran.
However, a hamstring injury might dampen the rest of Jones and the Vikings’ season.
That being said, this isn’t the first significant injury Jones has faced. He has previously faced MCL injuries, hamstring issues, knee sprains, and calf strains, further worrying fans about the chances of his speedy recovery.
His extensive injury history is another reason for being placed on the IR, especially if the team wants to be cautious.
With Jones Jr. away, Jordan Mason might have to step up for the team. The team has also signed Cam Akers, indicating that O’Connell is determined to keep a diverse lineup.
Jordan Mason’s Outlook for Week 3
With Jones out for Week 3, the field is set for Mason to perform.
Furthermore, Mason has been playing slightly better than Jones this season.
“The former San Francisco 49ers back is averaging more yards per carry (4.1-3.5) and has been nearly as effective in the passing game (three receptions each). If not for Jones’ 27-yard touchdown reception in Week 1, this wouldn’t look close,” wrote PFSN’s Jason Katz.
