As the BYU Cougars prepare for their Week 3 matchup against East Carolina, the focus isn’t just on the team’s undefeated start. Instead, all eyes are turning to freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, who has looked impressive through the first two games of the 2025 season but has yet to face a real challenge. The question on everyone’s mind is simple: Is the hype real?
How Will Bear Bachmeier Handle His First Road Test?
BYU legend and former coach Dennis Pitta, who is closely following the program, offered his perspective on what to expect from the young quarterback. His comments highlight the importance of the upcoming game.
“BYU looked dominant in their first two games, rightfully so,” Pitta said. “But I’m excited to see Bear Bachmeier play against some quality competition on the road. First time having to go quarterback in front of somebody else’s fans, and we’ll learn a lot about him.”
Bachmeier, a four-star recruit, played two standout seasons at Murrieta Valley High School before enrolling at Stanford for spring practices in 2025 and then committing to BYU. Through his first two games, the freshman has posted 272 passing yards, three touchdowns, and zero interceptions, along with a 73 percent completion rate under pressure. While those numbers are strong, BYU’s offense has yet to face a significant defensive test, making Saturday’s game at East Carolina a crucial evaluation.
Pitta emphasized that Bachmeier is a “great football player” with a promising career ahead. Having observed him for two seasons in high school, Pitta’s evaluation highlighted the quarterback’s ability to perform under pressure and adapt to new environments. That adaptability will be put to the test this weekend.
What Can Fans Expect from the BYU Offense?
So far, the BYU offense has been both productive and somewhat mysterious. Large, early-game leads have allowed head coach Kalani Sitake to run basic “day one install” plays, leaving fans to question whether the offense can maintain that performance level against tougher competition.

Expectations for the unit remain high, but the offense’s success truly revolves around Bachmeier. East Carolina is likely to stack the box and bring additional pressure to disrupt BYU’s ground game and force the freshman quarterback to make plays. If Bachmeier continues to perform well under duress, the Cougars should be able to move the ball effectively and silence some of the questions surrounding their early success.
Fortunately, the program has stability at the top. Sitake is entering his 10th season leading BYU football. A former Cougars running back under Hall of Fame coach LaVell Edwards, Sitake guided the program through its transition from FBS independence to the Big 12 Conference in 2023.
Over his nine completed seasons, he has compiled a 72-43 record, including an 11-2 season in 2024. Under his guidance, BYU has achieved double-digit win seasons three times in the past five years, cementing Sitake as one of the program’s most successful modern coaches.

Sitake’s consistent leadership provides a stable foundation for a program integrating a freshman quarterback into high-level competition. With Bachmeier under center, the Cougars aim to maintain their momentum and build toward a successful Big 12 campaign.
Ultimately, Bachmeier’s performance against East Carolina will be a key indicator of his readiness to compete at a high level on the road. With the support of a BYU legend and the steady leadership of Sitake, the freshman quarterback has the tools and guidance to make a strong impact as the 2025 season progresses.
