Clemson Injury Update: Latest Report on 3 Key Playmakers as PFSN Metrics Expose Deeper Tigers Troubles

Clemson received some positive injury news ahead of Week 4, but PFSN data suggests the program's troubles run beyond missing players.

Clemson Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney faces mounting pressure as key injuries pile up alongside concerning performance metrics that reveal deeper issues beyond just missing personnel. The Tigers’ 76.92 PFSN OFFi grade ranks them a troubling 65th nationally, highlighting systemic offensive struggles that extend well beyond their current injury list.

How Much Are Injuries Really Hurting Clemson’s Performance?

As first reported by Pete Thamel, Clemson received some encouraging injury news on Thursday night, with the announcement that wide receiver Antonio Williams, left tackle Tristan Leigh, and safety Khalil Barnes are probable for the Tigers’ Week 4 clash with the Syracuse Orange. After starting the year 1-2, positive injury news provides some cheer.

However, PFSN’s comprehensive grading system reveals that Clemson’s problems run deeper than personnel losses. Quarterback Cade Klubnik carries a concerning 78.2 QBi grade that ranks 63rd nationally, indicating struggles with clean pocket performance and clutch situations that the PFSN metric weighs heavily.

The offensive line unit grades even worse, with Blake Miller ranking 166th nationally among offensive linemen with an 81.8 PFSN OLi score. Harris Sewell (304th, 77.3) and Collin Sadler (327th, 76.4) provide little additional support, creating a domino effect that impacts every aspect of the offense.

Clemson’s bright spots come primarily on defense, where the secondary had shown genuine promise despite Barnes’ absence. Safety Ronan Hanafin leads the way with a stellar 91.6 SAFi grade that ranks 11th nationally, while cornerback Ashton Hampton contributes an 87.4 CBi grade good for 26th in the country. Ricardo Jones adds depth at safety with his 84.7 rating.

The linebacker corps provides additional stability with Wade Woodaz posting an 80.5 LBi grade that ranks 20th nationally. These defensive metrics explain Clemson’s respectable 80.3 DEFi team grade, which ranks 57th nationally and keeps them competitive despite offensive struggles.

Running back Adam Randall represents another positive, earning a strong 84.5 RBi grade that places him seventh nationally. His performance suggests the ground game could provide offensive relief if the blocking improves. Wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. also grades well at 83.1 (18th nationally), indicating talent exists at skill positions.

The coaching staff’s injury management becomes crucial given these underlying performance issues.

Nevertheless, the PFSN metrics suggest injuries alone cannot explain Clemson’s offensive woes. The 81.0 OLi team grade ranks 55th nationally, indicating systemic issues with both pass protection and run blocking that persist regardless of which specific players suit up.

Moving forward, Swinney must address both the immediate injury concerns and the deeper performance metrics that PFSN reveals. The defense provides a foundation for success, but offensive improvements require more than just getting healthy players back on the field.

The underlying grades suggest fundamental issues that need coaching solutions rather than personnel fixes alone. Clemson’s path forward depends on maximizing their defensive strengths while finding creative ways to support an offensive line that currently grades as mediocre by PFSN standards.
