Week 2 of the NFL season didn’t go as planned for the Minnesota Vikings. After a thrilling come-from-behind win over the Chicago Bears in Week 1, Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons exposed some cracks, and a big blow came in the form of an injury to veteran running back Aaron Jones Sr..
Aaron Jones Sr. Goes on Injured Reserve: What Was His Injury?
Jones went down in the second half of the game and never returned. The team has since placed him on injured reserve, which means he’ll miss at least the next four games.
For Minnesota, losing Jones is more than just a missing name in the lineup; he was supposed to be the cornerstone of the Vikings’ rushing attack this season.
Now that Jones is out, the Vikings’ backfield is completely different. Minnesota has brought in Cam Akers to help fill the void, while Jordan Mason, who split time with Jones, is anticipated to play a larger role. The Vikings will have to adapt their rushing attack immediately, and fans will eagerly monitor the performance of the new-look backfield.

Jones has experienced injury problems in the past. Throughout his career, he has battled MCL injuries, hamstring issues, knee sprains, and calf strains. Because of that history, this latest setback is concerning, and the Vikings are exercising caution by letting him fully recover on injured reserve. Given that even a seemingly modest hamstring injury might worsen if tested prematurely, Jones and the organization must remain patient.
What Does this Mean for the Minnesota Vikings?
While this is a tough break for the Vikings, it’s also an opportunity to see other players step up. Mason will get a chance to show what he can do in a bigger role, and Akers’ return could provide some much-needed depth.
Jones was expected to be a significant piece of the backfield in Minnesota, but with his new injury and the possibility that it lingers, he might not be the same player he was before.

Nonetheless, all eyes will be on Minnesota as it gets ready for its Week 3 game against the Cincinnati Bengals and sees how the offense adjusts without one of its primary weapons. Rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will also miss the contest, putting the Vikings further behind the eight ball.
Until then, Minnesota hopes its adjustments can keep the momentum going despite this early-season setback.
