The Super Bowl LIX rematch between the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday was shaping up to be an instant classic. With both defenses holding their own, the score was unsurprisingly knotted at 10-10 after the first two quarters.
The game continued to be closely contested throughout the night. However, in the fourth quarter, the entire matchup flipped on its head thanks to a goal-line interception by the Eagles.
The 41-yard return gave Philadelphia good field position and helped set up the Eagles to extend a 13-10 lead with a Jalen Hurts one-yard touchdown. The fault on the Chiefs side appeared to fall firmly on legendary tight end Travis Kelce, leading Patrick Mahomes to speak about it in the press conference.

Early in the fourth quarter, Philly had a 13-10 lead over the Chiefs. However, in what was Kansas City’s smoothest drive of the afternoon yet, Mahomes moved the ball downfield at will, quicky reaching the red zone.
On second-and-goal from the six-yard line, Mahomes threw a short pass to Kelce in the end zone. The ball caromed off the tight end and into the waiting hands of Andrew Mukuba, who was able to reel off his 41-yard return.
Even though the reigning AFC champions would eventually close the gap to 20-17 following Hurts’ touchdown, it wasn’t enough, and the Eagles walked away a victor for the third consecutive time in this matchup.
Kelce, who looked like he was finding his form again with 61 yards on four receptions, essentially flipped the game on its head. However, his running mate and quarterback squarely placed the blame on himself.
Taking full responsibility for the turnover, Mahomes said, “I think I threw it a tad too early, trying to put it on his body low, before that player got there. I believe if I put it more on his body than so far out in front of him, then he can catch and take the hit.”

Expanding, he continued, “You want to put it low, but just on his body whenever you are in tight corners like that. You want to give it to him, especially a bigger guy, more on his body so he catch and brace for the contact.”
Instead, he just framed the play as “unfortunate.” It was yet another showing of the class and leadership that has made Mahomes the premier quarterback in the league over the last seven years.

But the Chiefs are going to need a lot more from the two-time MVP to break out of their funk, considering they’ve now lost three consecutive games for the first time since he became a starter in 2018 while also starting 0-2 for the first time in that same span.
