Dolphins, Patriots Score Back-to-Back Return Touchdowns

The sequence began in the fourth quarter when Miami’s Malik Washington took a punt deep in his territory and took it 74 yards to the end zone.

Washington’s electrifying punt return was a rare sight early this season and gave the Dolphins a 27-23 lead.

The celebration was short-lived, as the Patriots responded on the very next play. Antonio Gibson took the ensuing kickoff 90 yards untouched for a touchdown of his own. Gibson’s kickoff return immediately erased the Dolphins’ lead, giving it back to the Patriots, 30-27.

This was a unique situation as both returns were the first in the 2025 NFL season. In particular, Gibson’s score proved crucial as it was the game-winning score.
The NFL has made significant changes in recent years to increase kickoff returns to boost excitement and player safety while encouraging more dynamic plays in the game.
One of the most impactful adjustments is the permanent adoption of the “dynamic kickoff” rule, first implemented as an experimental measure in 2024. This new format resembles a scrimmage play by aligning players from both teams closer together and restricting their movement until the ball is caught or touches the ground.
This reduces the space and speed of collisions, making kickoff returns safer and more frequent.
This season, the NFL moved the touchback starting position from the 30-yard line up to the 35-yard line. This change incentivizes kicking teams to avoid simply booting the ball deep for touchbacks, as the receiving team starts with better field position.
So far, the data shows this adjustment has increased kickoff return rates to around 65-75%, more than double the rate in 2023 before the dynamic kickoff’s introduction.

These innovative ideas aim to promote more kickoff returns, balancing action and player safety while adding strategic depth to the special teams phase of the game. The early results suggest the NFL is on track for a record year in kickoff return yards and exciting special teams plays in 2025, re-energizing one of football’s most thrilling moments.
