Alex de Minaur Replaces Frances Tiafoe in Laver Cup

World No. 8 Alex de Minaur has joined Team World for the Laver Cup San Francisco, replacing American Tiafoe in the lineup. This was the third American withdrawal from the tournament, with Ben Shelton and Tommy Paul opting out due to injuries.

The Australian was first unavailable due to his planned travel from Australia to Asia after the US Open. But when Captain Agassi and Vice Captain Pat Rafter called him with this chance, de Minaur quickly said yes.

De Minaur had earned his spot on the team based on his ranking after the French Open. He had to say no at first due to his schedule, but the 26-year-old will now fly back to the United States to help Team World try to reclaim the Laver Cup from Team Europe. Agassi was pleased about the addition and said he was excited to work with one of the world’s best players.

What Did de Minaur Say After Joining Team World?

When asked about joining the team, de Minaur was excited about what lies ahead. “It’s an honor to join Captain Agassi and Team World in San Francisco next week,” said de Minaur. “My first Laver Cup back in 2022 in London was an incredible experience, and I will be ready to give it everything I’ve got to help the team lift the Laver Cup at Chase Center.”

The Australian has great memories from his last Laver Cup appearance. In 2022, de Minaur helped Team World win its first-ever title in London, with his first match against Andy Murray being special. In a thrilling match, he came from behind to beat the British player 5-7, 6-3, 10-7.

The game lasted more than two and a half hours and showcased his on-court prowess. That win was key to Team World’s historic victory over the favored Europeans.

How Does de Minaur’s Recent Form Look Ahead of the Tournament?

The Australian has had a strong 2025 season with 41 wins and 16 losses. He won his tenth ATP singles title and third ATP 500 trophy at the Washington Open. He beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in an exciting final that needed a third-set tiebreak. This win helped him get back into the top 10 world rankings.

His Grand Slam results this year have been very good. De Minaur reached the quarterfinals at the Australian and US Open, proving he can play well at the most significant events. He made it to the fourth round at Wimbledon before losing to seven-time champion Novak Djokovic in four sets. He is known for his fantastic speed and never-quit attitude, making him a valuable player for Team World.

Team Europe has a 5-2 advantage over Team World in the all-time Laver Cup series. With the addition of De Minaur, Captain Agassi would be looking forward to even these odds in their team’s favor.
