The Indiana Fever wrapped up their 2025 campaign on a high note, finishing with a 24-20 record and securing a playoff berth. While it’s a reason for Fever fans to celebrate, the excitement is tempered by the reality that several of the team’s key players have been sidelined with injuries. Among them is guard Sophie Cunningham, whose season came to a heartbreaking end in mid-August. Now, Cunningham has delivered a welcome update about her road to recovery.
What Did Sophie Cunningham Say Regarding Her Recovery?
In the latest episode of the “Show Me Something Sophie Cunningham & West Wilson” podcast, co-host West Wilson posed a question that many Fever fans have wondered: how is Cunningham’s knee feeling? Without hesitation, Cunningham offered an honest response. She revealed that while rehabilitation has been challenging, she’s finding some enjoyment in the process, though she admitted it still feels weird getting back into the swing of things.
“Actually, rehab is kind of fun. This sounds really bad cause there’s like five of us in there, and we are all going through it, and three of us are kind of doing like the same rehab. So yeah, which is weird,” said Cunningham during the podcast.
Cunningham isn’t alone on her recovery journey. Five players occupy spots on Indiana’s injury list, including superstar Caitlin Clark, Chloe Bibby, Cunningham herself, Sydney Colson, and Aari McDonald. Most of these injuries involve lower-body issues like legs, knees, and groin, so when Cunningham mentioned rehabbing alongside her teammates, she was likely referring to this group.
Despite acknowledging that the rehabilitation process feels strange, Cunningham delivered the positive news fans have hoped to hear: she’s progressing well.
“But I think I’m just doing more, and it’s like progressing really, really well. But with that, like anytime you push an injury, it’s just going to ache and stuff when you are doing something new,” added Cunningham.
That progress has been clear to fans as well. Earlier this month, she shared a playful Instagram story of dancing in a knee brace to Renee Rapp’s hit song “I Think I Like You Better When You’re Gone.”

Cunningham’s injury occurred on Aug. 17 during a home game against the Connecticut Sun. In the second quarter, as she stepped in to defend a hard drive from guard Bria Hartley, her right knee twisted awkwardly upon contact. Cunningham immediately fell to the floor in visible pain, clutching her leg as medical staff rushed to her aid. She could not return to the game, logging just one rebound before her exit. Shortly afterward, the Fever confirmed that Cunningham had suffered an MCL tear that would sideline her for the remainder of the season.

While the setback was devastating, Cunningham has remained optimistic about her recovery. In a previous podcast episode, she reassured fans by revealing that she expects to return to action by January or February of next year.
“Well, they say like four months. Yeah, they say like four months. I’d say like January, February, but I feel like I am not trying to say anything, but I think I heal quicker and recover quite fast. And so maybe a tab of four, but oh my god,” stated Cunningham during a previous episode.
Before her injury, Cunningham averaged 8.6 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game. Her energy and toughness have long been assets for the team, and the Fever will be eager to welcome her back to the lineup.
