Australian Davis Cup Captain Lleyton Hewitt Suspended Over Offensive Conduct

Hewitt has been serving as Australia’s Davis Cup captain since 2016 after a distinguished playing career that included two Davis Cup titles in 1999 and 2003. Under his leadership, the team reached the Davis Cup Finals in 2022 and 2023.

However, he recently found himself in hot water when the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) suspended him for two weeks and fined him AU$30,000 for pushing a 60-year-old anti-doping chaperone following a Davis Cup semi-final loss to Italy in November 2024.

Hewitt denied the charge, claiming self-defense, but an independent tribunal ruled that his conduct was unreasonable and did not meet the threshold for self-defense. The suspension, effective from Sept. 24 to Oct. 7, 2025, bars him from all tennis-related activities, including coaching and captaincy.

The ITIA highlighted the importance of anti-doping officials performing their duties without fear of physical confrontation. Hewitt has not filed an appeal yet.

ITIA CEO Karen Moorehouse released a statement, saying, “The actions of the individual were unacceptable and have no place in our sport. The decision to impose a lifetime ban was the right one in these circumstances.”

The second round of the 2025 Davis Cup Qualifiers is scheduled from Sept. 12 to 14, 2025, with matches taking place across various international venues. This round features 14 teams competing for seven spots in the Final 8, joining host nation Italy. Notable players in this round include Alex de Minaur, representing Australia against Belgium, and top 10 player Holger Rune, who will lead Denmark against Spain.

Carlos Alcaraz Withdraws From Davis Cup Qualifiers Following the US Open Win

Carlos Alcaraz has decided to withdraw from Spain’s Davis Cup second-round qualifier against Denmark, scheduled for Sept. 13–14, 2025, in Marbella. The young Spanish star, aged 22, decided to withdraw his name after a long and intense run in hard-court tournaments. Notably, the Spaniard recently won the US Open title by beating Jannik Sinner in the final, giving him his sixth Grand Slam victory.

Before the US Open, Alcaraz also won the Cincinnati Open, where Sinner retired during their final match. In addition, he played mixed doubles at the US Open alongside Emma Raducanu. Due to the busy schedule and quick changes between events, Alcaraz and his team agreed it was best for him to rest and recover rather than risk injury or burnout.

Spain has called Jaume Munar for the Davis Cup tie to fill his spot. Alcaraz plans to return to the court soon, with his next competition being the Laver Cup in San Francisco from Sept. 19–21, 2025.
