NHL Trade Rumors: Detroit Red Wings Checking In On $92M D-Man

Rumors continue to swirl about the Detroit Red Wings and their search for a difference-maker as camp looms and pressure builds.

The Detroit Red Wings find themselves at the center of trade speculation again. With training camp approaching, rumors suggest they could be pursuing one of the NHL’s highest-paid defensemen in what would be a franchise-altering move.

This isn’t the first time Detroit has appeared in these conversations, but the timing feels different. The Red Wings made several moves during the summer, though none fully addressed their glaring need for an elite defender. Now the focus has shifted to a potential blockbuster that could reshape their blue line overnight.

Who’ll Find Their Way to Detroit Red Wings?

The defenseman generating all this buzz is three-time Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson, who is 35. The $92 million star’s peak years may be behind him, but his ability to run a power play and move the puck remains elite.

Josh Yohe, a Penguins-focused columnist for The Athletic, recently appeared on the “Kevin Karius Show” and spoke openly about the situation. He explained that Karlsson hasn’t meshed in Pittsburgh and that management wants to move on.

“I really think he wants to trade Erik Karlsson,” Yohe said. “Karlsson has not worked in Pittsburgh, and it’s been somewhat of a disaster to watch him play. But I know there are teams that are interested in him.”

Yohe also highlighted how money complicates any potential deal. “The Penguins will have to eat some money if they do trade him; no one wants the $10 million cap hit that he comes with,” he added. “But I wouldn’t be shocked if you hear his name pop up sooner rather than later. Detroit is the team I’ve heard the most.”

The Red Wings have about $12 million in cap space to work with, and Steve Yzerman has already proven he’ll act when the right opportunity presents itself. His trade for John Gibson in goal demonstrates that approach. However, the blue line still needs a legitimate top-pairing addition.

What Would Karlsson Bring to Detroit’s Defense?

For Detroit, acquiring Karlsson would represent more than just a headline-grabbing move. His 53 points in 2024-25 would have topped all Red Wings defensemen, surpassing Moritz Seider’s 46. That offensive production could make the difference in tight playoff races in the competitive Atlantic Division.

The challenge remains financial. Karlsson carries an $11.5 million cap hit, and no one expects Yzerman to absorb that full amount. Pittsburgh would need to retain significant salary, while Detroit might have to surrender draft picks or prospects to make the numbers work.

Training camp opens soon, leaving a narrow window for any major transactions. The Penguins want cap flexibility, Detroit needs defensive reliability, and Karlsson controls his destiny with a full no-movement clause that gives him veto power over any trade.

Nothing is guaranteed at this point. But the speculation continues building momentum, and if Detroit does make a serious push for Karlsson, it would become one of the biggest storylines as the 2025-26 season approaches.
