Amanda Anisimova couldn’t contain her sadness after she lost her second Grand Slam final of 2025 at the US Open. The American was denied the title by defending champion Aryna Sabalenka on Saturday, September 6.
Anisimova fancied her chances in the ultimate showdown against the World No. 1 given her impressive 6-3 head-to-head record before the match.
Amanda Anisimova Bursts Into Tears After Losing US Open Final to Aryna Sabalenka
Anisimova, who was beaten 6-0, 6-0 by Iga Świątek in the Wimbledon final just a few weeks ago, was visibly distraught after losing her second Grand Slam final in a row, this time in front of her home crowd in New York. The 24-year-old fought back tears as she went to congratulate and hug Sabalenka.
After returning to her bench, Anisimova covered her face in a towel and cried uncontrollably.

Amanda Anisimova’s US Open 2025 Campaign
Anisimova’s journey in New York was nothing short of spectacular. The World No. 9 began her campaign with a straight-sets win against Kimberly Birrell. She then beat Maya Joint, Jaqueline Cristian, and Beatriz Haddad Maia before seeking revenge against former champion Świątek in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, Anisimova edged out two-time champion Naomi Osaka with a comeback win.
In the final, Anisimova started on the back foot, losing her first service game to allow her opponent a 2-0 lead. She, however, made a swift recovery in the very next game. The American briefly turned the tables to secure another break, leading 3-2. She ultimately failed to consolidate the break and was broken again in her next service game. Sabalenka clinched the opener 6-3.
The second set started similarly, with the home favorite losing her service game first. After another exchange of breaks, Sabalenka claimed the lead and seemed poised to close the match in the tenth game of the set at 5-4. Her opponent, though, refused to back down. With Sabalenka just two points away from victory, Amanda Anisimova secured a very timely break, eventually forcing a tiebreak.
At this stage, the American was no match for Aryna Sabalenka, who entered the contest with an impeccable 20-1 record in tiebreaks this year. The defending champion successfully reclaimed her crown with the score reading 6-3, 7-6(3) after one hour and 36 minutes of play.

Anisimova, who became the first player in history to reach the very next Grand Slam final after being double-bageled in her previous one, staged a better performance this time around. Thanks to her remarkable campaign in New York, the two-time Major finalist is set to assume a new career-high ranking of World No. 4 come Monday.
