‘Upset’ Cade Klubnik Admits Doing Something Against LSU He’s Never Done Before

Cade Klubnik acknowledges an uncharacteristic mistake after Clemson’s loss to LSU ahead of their Week 2 clash vs Troy.

The Clemson Tigers once again opened their 2025 season with bitter disappointment, falling 17-10 to Brian Kelly’s LSU at Memorial Stadium. Despite leading 10-3 at halftime, the Tigers were shut out in the second half, failing to generate consistent offense as LSU mounted a comeback.

The loss marked Clemson’s second straight season-opening defeat, following a 34-3 loss to Georgia in 2024. LSU’s victory was significant, snapping a five-game losing skid and giving the program its first season-opening win since Joe Burrow led the Tigers to the 2019 national championship.

What was expected to be an offensive showcase between Cade Klubnik and Garrett Nussmeier turned into a defensive battle. But the quarterback under the most scrutiny was Clemson’s Klubnik.

What Did Cade Klubnik Say After Clemson’s Loss to LSU?

Much of the postgame discussion centered on senior quarterback Cade Klubnik, who struggled to find his rhythm. He finished 19-of-38 passing for 230 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. For a Clemson team that was 59-3 when leading at home over the last decade, his off night proved costly.

In a press conference, Klubnik admitted the loss stung. “I was pissed off after the game, and I was upset,” he said. “And it took me a few days to really bounce back from it because of the way that, you know, I played.”

The Clemson signal-caller also acknowledged something he had never experienced before. “I think sometimes I was thinking about it more than feeling it, which I don’t think I’ve ever really done in a game before. So, it kind of is what it is, and I learned from it,” he said.

Klubnik that he overanalyzed LSU’s defensive looks instead of relying on instinct.

“I think just simplifying the game, man. Just get back to the routine things and get back to the basics, and not making it too much about them. You get ready for a team and schematically get ready, and want to know what they’re going to be doing, but you can’t be thinking about that mid-play. You got to be feeling it, not thinking about it.”

Head coach Dabo Swinney did not hold back in his evaluation of Klubnik’s performance, saying, “He just didn’t play well.”

Even so, both Swinney and Klubnik expressed belief in the team’s ability to bounce back. Klubnik added:

“I got to attack every single day and attack every week, and I think that’s what I got to d,o and that’s what needs to be done. Just excited to go back to work… I think it’s a really good team that’s going to have a great year.”

What’s Ahead For Clemson in Week 2

Clemson won’t have much time to dwell on the LSU loss as it prepares for a Week 2 matchup against Troy. The Trojans, members of the Sun Belt Conference, have won eight league championships, including one in 2023. While Clemson leads the all-time series 2-0, Troy’s recent success makes the team a dangerous Group of Five opponent.

“I think Coach Swinney said it, he said it to us before, and I know he said it to y’all, but this game gave me no doubt about our team and what we can do. It totally fulfilled us with confidence in what we can do and what we’re about, and it’s exciting,” Klubnik said.

The Week 1 loss has raised questions, but with a long season ahead, both the quarterback and head coach appear determined to reset quickly. The Troy game offers a chance to regain confidence, establish rhythm and prove that the LSU setback was a stumble rather than a sign of deeper issues.
