The college football spotlight shines on Norman this weekend as Oklahoma hosts Michigan in one of the early marquee matchups of the 2025-26 season. For Sooners head coach Brent Venables, the game brings a mix of nostalgia and challenge.
Not only will he square off against Michigan’s new head coach, Sherrone Moore, a former Oklahoma offensive lineman, but he will also have to find a way to slow down true freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, who impressed in his Wolverines debut.
Brent Venables Compares Bryce Underwood to Trevor Lawrence
Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood made his mark in Michigan’s season-opening 34-17 win over New Mexico, completing 21 of 31 passes for 251 yards and a touchdown. At 6’4″ and 228 pounds, Underwood already looks the part of a future NFL star — and Venables agrees.
“He’s a guy that, man, he’s a little different,” Venables said. “He reminds me a lot of Trevor Lawrence, just quick, decisive, accurate, poised, tough, consistent. There’s a reason he was the No. 1 player in America, and he’s got a maturity and a work ethic and leadership ability to go along with that.”

The comparison to Lawrence, the Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback who recently signed a $275 million NFL contract extension, highlights how highly Venables regards Underwood. Facing one of the nation’s top defensive minds in just his second college game will be a true test of Underwood’s readiness.
A Reunion With Sherrone Moore
This weekend also marks a homecoming for Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore, who played offensive line at Oklahoma from 2006 to 2007 when Venables was the Sooners’ defensive coordinator. Venables fondly recalled his former player during his weekly press conference.
“Obviously, he was a great player, great leader, ultra consistent,” Venables said. “He was a guy that loved to compete. Super physical. One of the linemen that just did the methodical very, very well. Day in and day out, ultra consistent. Really smart. Guys gravitated to his leadership style.”

Moore has carried that reputation for leadership into his coaching career, where he quickly rose through the ranks to become the first African American head coach in Michigan football history. Saturday will bring a unique dynamic as the two former Sooners face off on opposite sidelines.
Venables’ Defensive Pedigree
If anyone is equipped to challenge Underwood early in his career, it’s Venables. The longtime defensive mastermind has coached in eight national championship games, winning titles with Oklahoma in 2000 and Clemson in 2016 and 2018.
Since being named Oklahoma’s head coach in 2021, he has posted a 22-17 record, highlighted by a 10-3 season in 2023 in which the Sooners ranked among the nation’s best in both offense and defense.
