Just one week into the college football season, the University of Central Florida’s starting quarterback situation is already uncertain.
After leaving Thursday’s game against Jacksonville State early in the second quarter following a hard hit, the original starter and senior Cam Fancher is dealing with a back and leg injury. While Fancher did not suffer a concussion, he was replaced by Tayven Jackson after completing five passes out of nine for 32 yards. Jackson then stepped in and threw for 282 yards on 17-for-24 passing, including the game-winning touchdown with just over a minute to play in the 17-10 victory.
What Does This Mean for UCF’s Quarterback Battle?
Throughout training camp, UCF’s head coach Scott Frost managed a three-man quarterback competition. Fancher, who previously played for three seasons at Marshall and spent the 2024 season with Florida Atlantic University, ultimately earned the starting role for Week 1.
However, according to FOX Sports, Frost’s quarterback battle is now expected to continue into the season.

Adding to the uncertainty, a depth chart released Monday morning still lists Fancher as the starter for Saturday’s game against North Carolina A&T. Despite this, Frost did not rule out using two quarterbacks and emphasized that he wants to see more from Jackson in practice.
“We say all the time, you don’t rise to the occasion, you sink to the level of your training. You can talk to almost every coach in the country and they’re not going to trust someone who doesn’t practice well but tells you they’re going to go out and play different than they practice,” Frost said regarding Jackson‘s performance. “We’ve got to go based on what we see, and Tayven did well, but I know there’s another level there in him, and I just want to see that all the time.”

The Knights will face the Aggies at 7 p.m. ET on Saturday. North Carolina A&T is coming off a 24-21 loss to the Tennessee State Tigers.
