For all of his success and stature in football, North Carolina head coach Bill Belichick might be the most watched and scrutinized first-year head coach in the NCAA in 2025.
However, while this might initially seem like an odd pairing, former Alabama head coach Nick Saban thinks Belichick’s presence in Chapel Hill will benefit the Tar Heels.
What Does Bill Belichick Bring to UNC Football?
Ross Martin posted comments from Nick Saban, Belichick’s contemporary and friend, about how he will positively affect college players.
“Nick Saban on Bill Belichick on @CollegeGameDay: “Bill’s strength as a coach is developing players. How you engage with them. How you inspire them. How you influence them. How you impact their development to improve.”

Nice little 5-minute ad for #UNC football.

Belichick is not known for an extensive coaching tree, but he is known for coaching players up thanks to his intense attention to detail, his demand that players focus on their specific jobs, and his focus on cohesion and execution. His emphasis on the little things adds up to larger advancements.
His no-nonsense approach to coaching still extends to his press conferences. Famously known for his deadpan delivery and sometimes sardonic takes from the podium, Belichick was candid when he soberly broke down the challenges his Tar Heels will face against TCU.
R.L. Byrnum of the Tar Heel Tribune reports that Belichick broke down the most pressing problems.
“[The] number of explosive plays they get is impressive,” Belichick said, adding that TCU is “very good after the catch. You’ve got to defend every blade of grass on the field.”
Belichick is rebuilding UNC’s roster and acknowledges that the early-season focus is on learn every day and that his team is “far from perfect.”
On top of that, Belichick knows that his defense will be poked, prodded, and tested in every way possible.
“You can’t cover a receiver and stop the run,” Belichick said. “You can’t cover a short zone and still cover the middle zone. You’ve got to do your job, and everybody has to do theirs, and you have to play good team defense. We have to tackle well.”
TCU’s head coach, Sonny Dykes, has made it clear he isn’t taking his matchup against North Carolina lightly and has spent a lot of time studying Belichick’s schemes from his days in New England.
If nothing else, Belichick knows that every team he plays will be bringing their A-game against his squad. The Horned Frogs and the Tar Heels clash Monday, Labor Day, in Chapel Hill at 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN.
