The Minnesota Wild were in a tough place this offseason. But with GM Bill Guerin finally getting Marco Rossi signed on a three-year deal, he has just one last piece missing. And that is to get their star player, Kirill Kaprizov, to sign a contract extension.
With the training camp just a few weeks away and the upcoming season looming, the Wild would want to get Kaprizov re-signed on a long-term deal. And one insider believes this forthcoming extension might be a massive payday for the forward.
Insider Believes Kirill Kaprizov Might Be Looking at a Massive Deal for Contract Extension
Since making his debut for the Wild in the 2020-21 season, Kaprizov has remained the face of the franchise for the Wild. With 50+ points in five consecutive seasons for the team, he has been sensational for the last few years for the franchise.
However, with him in the final year of his five-year, $45 million deal, the Wild would like to sign him to a full contract before the offseason ends. Mark Russo of ‘The Athletic’ believes that while the extension talks are still ongoing, the payday might be massive.
On the recent episode of “Worst Seats in the House Podcast,” Russo mentioned, “You know, it was when I talked to Billy about 10 days from them. I believe they have offered him a ton of money. I think even more than I thought.”
Analysts had estimated the deal to be around the $120 million figure for an eight-year deal, with an AAV of $15 million. But Russo believes it might be even more. He mentioned, “On an eight-year deal, they’re willing to pay him (an AAV) in the $16 million range.”

This puts the total figure at a massive $128 million. If the Wild offer this deal, then Kaprizov will have the chance to have the biggest NHL contract ever, surpassing Leon Draisaitl’s eight-year, $112 million contract with the Edmonton Oilers.
Russo mentioned, “We will see. But as of now, it hasn’t been done. Billy is still voicing optimism and confidence that it will get done. But the longer this goes, the bigger the concern there is because you know you don’t sign like this.”
Russo believes that the Wild need to be sure that Kaprizov wants to remain in Minnesota before offering him such a deal. He continued, “The Wild believe he wants to be here. But the next month will be really telling, in my opinion, with Kirill.”
Co-host Anthony LaPanta mentioned, “I think if you’re the Wild, I don’t know how long you keep that offer on the table.” He believes that if the deal offered is really $16 million for eight years, and if Kaprizov doesn’t jump on it by training camp, the Wild will know that Kaprizov isn’t willing to commit.
LaPanta mentioned that this number will exceed Kaprizov’s total package from anybody else. So if he really wants to stay in Minnesota, he will sign it soon.
