Ben Shelton's US Open journey ended abruptly, but the 22-year-old American chose gratitude over disappointment after the setback.

How Did Ben Shelton’s US Open Dreams End So Suddenly?

Shelton’s retirement marked a painful first in his young career. After 178 professional matches, the sixth-seeded star had never pulled out of a contest until Friday night’s third-round clash with Adrian Mannarino.

The match started like so many others this summer, with Shelton looking sharp and confident. He had powered through the opening rounds without dropping a set, dismissing Ignacio Buse and Pablo Carreño Busta with the aggressive style that carried him to his first Masters 1000 title just weeks earlier.

Playing under the Friday night lights, the Atlanta native appeared in complete control after splitting the opening four sets with the veteran Frenchman. Then disaster struck midway through the fourth set.

While stretching for a return, Shelton landed awkwardly on his left arm. The pain was immediate and visible as he clutched his shoulder, but the competitor in him refused to quit easily. He fought through the discomfort, even saving set points with his trademark aggressive net play, desperately trying to push his body past its limits.

After nearly three hours on court, however, the injury became too much to bear. Shelton tearfully accepted the signal from his father and coach, Bryan Shelton, to end the match. Mannarino advanced with the scoreline reading 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 4-6.

Why Did Shelton Choose Gratitude Over Disappointment?

Despite the crushing defeat, Shelton’s post-match press conference revealed the maturity that has defined his remarkable rise. Rather than dwelling on what might have been, he focused on perspective.

“I got a lot to be grateful for. Been pretty fortunate in my life. Blessings, talents, a lot of things God’s given me. And a small setback like this, yeah, it hurts,” he said.

The American reflected on his recent form with pride instead of frustration. “I was playing really well. I was in form. A lot of confidence. Just so many things to be happy with, the way that I was playing, moving on the court, competing.”

For Shelton, this summer represented a breakthrough that no single injury could diminish. His Masters 1000 triumph in Toronto and semifinal run in Washington had already validated years of hard work and belief.

“Like I said, it’s been a great summer. A lot of things to be thankful for. You won’t hear me over here pouting about how bad things are with the summer that I’ve had, the things that I’ve been able to do in this sport in a short amount of time. And the people that I got around me, like I said, a lot of blessings.”

Meanwhile, Mannarino advanced to his maiden fourth round in his 15th main draw appearance in New York. The 36-year-old will face 20th seed Jiří Lehečka, representing uncharted territory for the veteran Frenchman.
