The sixth seed arrived at Flushing Meadows as the reigning Australian Open champion and one of the tournament favorites. Her pedigree suggested a deep run was inevitable. Instead, Madison Keys suffered a shocking defeat to Mexico’s Renata Zarazúa, ranked No. 82 in the world, in a grueling opening-round battle on August 25.
The statistics told the story of a player fighting herself as much as her opponent. Despite hammering 46 winners, Keys piled up 89 unforced errors and 14 double faults in a three-hour and 10-minute marathon that ended 6-7(10), 7-6(3), 7-5 under the lights at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The loss stunned tennis fans given her dominant form earlier in the year and her proven hardcourt credentials.

What Did Keys Reveal About Her Mental State During the Loss?
Following her shocking first-round exit in New York, Keys told reporters about the mental battle that ultimately cost her the match. The pressure of trying to close out the contest against Zarazúa overwhelmed her, leaving her feeling frozen on the court.
“I feel like today, for the first time in a while, my nerves really got the better of me, and it kind of became a little bit paralysing. I want to win, but just feeling like winning matters just way too much, and I just couldn’t quite separate myself from that. Then once you start playing badly, it just kind of all snowballs,” Keys said in the post-match press conference.
The disappointment extended beyond singles play. Keys also lost in mixed doubles alongside fellow American and close friend Frances Tiafoe, falling to third seeds and eventual finalists Casper Ruud and Iga Świątek in straight sets.
