Jack Draper on US Open Withdrawal

Draper reached his maiden Grand Slam semifinal at last year’s edition of the New York Major. The Brit was seeded fifth this year and faced Argentina’s Federico Agustin Gomez. It wasn’t completely smooth sailing for Draper but he managed to pull off a 6-4, 7-5, 6-7(7), 6-2 win.

The 23-year-old was scheduled to face Zizou Bergs in the second round but he eventually announced his withdrawal from the men’s singles event. Draper wrote on X that the discomfort in his arm makes it difficult for him to carry on.

“Hi guys, I’m sorry to say I’ll be withdrawing from the US open. I tried my very best to be here and give myself the every chance to play but the discomfort in my arm has become to much and I have to do what is right and look after myself. Thank you for all the support,” the Brit wrote.

Draper’s injury has been around for a while as he felt it during Wimbledon and was the reason he missed the Masters 1000 events in Toronto and Cincinnati. Speaking ahead of the US Open, the Brit stated:

“It’s an injury which takes time to heal. A bone can heal but it might be giving me some discomfort.

With Draper withdrawing, Bergs has received a walkover to the third round of the US Open, making it only the second time he has gone that far at a Grand Slam. Here, the Belgian will face either 31st seed Gabriel Diallo or Jaume Munar.

Draper Previously Took Part in US Open Mixed Doubles Event

Before the men’s singles tournament, the Brit was among the 32 players to compete in the revamped mixed doubles event at the US Open, partnering Jessica Pegula. The duo were seeded first at the event and beat Carlos Alcaraz and Emma Raducanu 4-2, 4-2 to reach the quarterfinals.

Here, they triumphed 4-1, 4-1 over the Russian pair of Daniil Medvedev and Mirra Andreeva to book their place in the semifinals. Draper and Pegula faced third seeds Iga Świątek and Casper Ruud in the final four and lost 5-3, 3-5 [8-10].

Following his US Open exit, the 23-year-old is next scheduled to compete at the Chengdu Open, which starts on September 17.
