The Jacksonville Jaguars had one of the most transformative offseasons in the NFL. Bringing in a new general manager and head coach duo, the organization was ready to move in an aggressive new direction. A plethora of moves followed that game plan. The biggest, perhaps, was the draft-day trade for Travis Hunter.
However, their work hasn’t stopped. Even now, just one day removed from the NFL’s roster cutdown day, the franchise continues to work towards improving its squad. As a result, they made a shrewd trade to further shore up the weapons around Trevor Lawrence, who could be poised for a breakout campaign in 2025.
Jaguars Continue Finding Weapons for Trevor Lawrence
Last year, rookie Brian Thomas Jr. exploded into one of the best wide receivers in the league. Add in Hunter, and Jacksonville has to hope that the offense can be truly elite.
With an offensive mastermind at head coach in Liam Coen, those hopes will only get higher, and general manager James Gladstone is leaving no stone unturned to get his new coach all the necessary pieces.
This summer, they added Hunter and wide receiver Dyami Brown as significant additions to their wide receiver room. But Gladstone isn’t standing pat. One day after roster cutdown day, the Jaguars traded a 2026 second-round pick to the Detroit Lions for veteran receiver Tim Patrick.
Patrick, an undrafted free agent from 2017, spent the first seven years of his career with the Denver Broncos. Starting slow, he eventually found his niche on the roster, delivering back-to-back seasons with over 700 yards.
However, a torn ACL and Achilles in subsequent seasons kept him out for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns. He eventually returned to the gridiron with the Lions in 2024, recording 394 yards and three touchdowns.
Those three years account for 14 of his 15 total touchdowns in the league. But Detroit liked what they saw from the Utah product, signing him back on a one-year deal worth $5 million.
However, he didn’t last long with the organization, as Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network confirmed, “Trade! The #Lions are sending WR Tim Patrick to the #Jaguars, per source.” Now, Patrick will battle with Brown for the WR3 role in Jacksonville.

Last year, as the offensive coordinator of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Coen utilized wide receivers Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and Jalen McMillan in a number of ways, making full use of the weapons available to him.
The arrival of Patrick potentially signals a chance for Jacksonville to achieve similar results.
Meanwhile, Detroit adds an additional draft pick for a player who was rumored to be a cut candidate. This also means third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa will be the Lions’ WR3 behind Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams. TeSlaa had a terrific training camp and preseason, earning a ton of hype in the process.
