The tennis world rarely sees moments where legends cross paths in unexpected ways. But when Novak Djokovic challenged Serena Williams to return to professional tennis during his US Open press conference, he created exactly that kind of electric moment.
The timing couldn’t be more perfect, with Venus Williams proving that age is just a number by competing at 45.
What Did Novak Djokovic Say to Challenge Serena Williams?
Following his record 75th consecutive first-round Grand Slam victory over Learner Tien, Djokovic discussed Maria Sharapova’s induction into the Tennis Hall of Fame. However, the conversation took an unexpected turn when he addressed Williams’ presence at the ceremony.
“It was great. It was wonderful moment, and I think Maria deserves it, obviously. Incredible champion and an icon off the court as well with her brand and everything she has built over the years,” Djokovic said about Sharapova’s induction.
The Serbian then praised Williams for her surprising gesture of inducting her former rival. “It was surprising, but it was a gracious gesture from Serena to be there for Maria. They had really intense rivalry and incredible matches over the years. But they were honest during their speeches. They said that people would probably think about Serena being one of the last people that would be there,” he said. He presented his take on Williams inducting Sharapova into the Hall of Fame.
But what came next caught everyone off guard. After expressing his excitement about seeing Williams around tennis, Djokovic made his bold challenge.
“And, of course, seeing Serena in any shape or form around tennis is great,” he acknowledged. “So, I invite her, I challenge her because she’s such a great competitor. So when somebody challenges her, she never refuses. So I challenge Serena, come back on a tour next year.”

The press room erupted in laughter, but Djokovic’s challenge carried genuine weight. Williams, who will turn 44 next month, has never officially announced her retirement from tennis. Instead, she described her departure from the sport in 2022 as an “evolution” rather than retirement, keeping the door technically open for her return.
How Does Venus Williams’ Comeback Set the Stage?
Djokovic’s timing couldn’t have been more strategic. Venus Williams is currently proving that the Williams family still has fight left, competing at the 2025 US Open at age 45. The elder Williams sister returned to Grand Slam competition for the first time in two years, facing 11th seed Karolina Muchova in the first round.

Venus received a wildcard for her 25th US Open main draw appearance, making her the oldest player to compete in singles at the tournament since 1981. She also teamed up with compatriot Reilly Opelka for the US Open mixed doubles, though the pair got eliminated in the first round by Andrey Rublev and Karolína Muchová.
The Williams sisters won doubles titles together at the US Open in 1999 and 2009, adding another compelling layer to this story. With Venus demonstrating that elite competition remains possible well into the 40s, Djokovic’s playful challenge to Serena suddenly seems less far-fetched and more like a genuine possibility that could electrify the tennis world once again.
