With Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton at the Top, Who Are the 23 American Men Competing in the US Open 2025 Singles Main Draw?

Twenty-three American men, led by Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton, begin their campaign to end the nation's 22-year Grand Slam drought at Flushing Meadows.

As the 2025 US Open begins, American tennis fans are clinging to hope that this could finally be the year. Twenty-three men will carry the red, white, and blue into Flushing Meadows, but the weight of history sits heavily. No American male has lifted the trophy since Andy Roddick’s triumph 22 years ago. The drought’s end either starts on Sunday, August 24, or stretches into its 23rd year.

How Do Taylor Fritz and Ben Shelton Lead America’s Charge?

The 2025 US Open marks the 145th edition of the tournament, and the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is hungry for an American male champion. Taylor Fritz gave the home crowd hope by reaching last year’s final, and while he fell short, his journey proved that breaking through remains possible.

Fritz leads the American contingent as the No. 4 seed in the 128-man field. His confidence should be sky-high after proving he belongs on the sport’s biggest stages, reaching the Wimbledon semifinal. Ben Shelton earned the No. 6 seed following his breakthrough season, which included capturing his first ATP 1000 tournament at the Canadian Open. Shelton’s victory over Karen Khachanov in that final demonstrated the explosive game that makes him dangerous on any given day.

Four other Americans earned seeded positions in the draw. Tommy Paul claimed the No. 14 seed while Frances Tiafoe sits at No. 17, both cracking the top 20. Meanwhile, Alex Michelsen secured the No. 28 seed as Brandon Nakashima rounds out the group at No. 30.

Which Unseeded Americans Could Make Waves?

Beyond the seeded players, 17 additional Americans will take the court with everything to prove. The qualifier group features Martin Damm and Zachary Svajda, who earned their spots through grueling three-round tournaments.

Damm captured the fourth qualifier spot by defeating Stefano Travaglia, Benjamin Hassan, and Yuta Shimizu. His championship match included a marathon 12-10 tiebreak in the opening set, showcasing the mental toughness required at this level. Svajda claimed the sixth qualifier position with victories over August Holmgren, Beibit Zhukayev, and Marc-Andrea Huesler. Two other Americans, Mitchell Krueger and Garrett Johns, reached qualifier finals but fell just short of the main draw.

The unseeded direct entries bring veteran experience and rising talent. This group includes Brandon Holt, Jenson Brooksby, Aleksandar Kovacevic, Learner Tien, Mackenzie McDonald, Sebastian Korda, Ethan Quinn, Marcos Giron, and Reilly Opelka. Each player carries the potential to cause early-round upsets.

Six of the tournament’s eight wildcards went to American players: Nishesh Basavareddy, Darwin Blanch, Tristan Boyer, Stefan Dostanic, Emilio Nava, and Eliot Spizzirri. These young Americans will get their first taste of Grand Slam tennis on home soil.

What First-Round Matchups Will Test the American Seeds?

The draw ceremony revealed intriguing opening-round battles for America’s seeded players. Tommy Paul faces Elmer Moller in Section 1, while Alex Michelsen takes on Francisco Comesana in Section 5. Frances Tiafoe squares off against Yoshihito Nishioka in the same section.

Section 6 presents the most compelling American storyline. Brandon Nakashima battles Jesper de Jong, but all eyes will be on Fritz’s clash with wildcard Emilio Nava. The matchup pits the country’s top player against one of its rising prospects, guaranteeing that an American advances to the second round from that particular match.

Ben Shelton completes the seeded American first-round slate in Section 7, where he’ll face Ignacio Buse. The explosive left-hander will look to channel the energy that carried him to his Canadian Open title just weeks ago.
