How Did Cam Skattebo Do for the Giants?

In his first action, Skattebo had three carries for 12 yards. He took a handoff from Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart and moved left for four yards. The 23-year-old running back was taken out of the game after his first-half carries.

With a hamstring injury, Skattebo had missed the Giants’ first two preseason games. But he returned to the Giants’ practice field this week for team drills.

But he looked pretty good on his first carry, even though he ended up sliding on the turf while getting tackled.

At this point, Skattebo is listed at No. 3 on the Giants’ depth chart at running back behind Tyrone Tracy Jr. and Devin Singletary. How might Giants head coach Brian Daboll use Skattebo this season? It’s possible that the rookie will be part of a running-back-by-committee setup.

How should fantasy football players look at Skattebo when building their teams? PFSN’s Jason Katz offers his thoughts as Skattebo gets ready for his first pro career.

“I think a lot of the Skattebo hype is a bit overblown,” Katz wrote. “Tracy is still the starter and the better pass catcher. For him to relinquish that role without an injury would involve a very talented alternative outplaying him. Forgive me, but I don’t view Skattebo as that player.

“Skattebo is a power back,” Katz wrote. “At 219 pounds, he does project better at the goal line, which could be an issue. But in terms of taking the rest of the work, I don’t see it.” Katz added that he has Skattebo ranked at RB33. “I acknowledge the upside, but I am not particularly excited about drafting him,” according to Katz.

As a senior at Arizona State, Skattebo had 293 carries for 1,711 yards and 21 touchdowns. Skattebo also showed an ability to catch passes, totaling 45 receptions for 605 yards and three touchdowns. He finished fifth in voting for the 2024 Heisman Trophy behind winner Travis Hunter of Colorado.

New York will open its NFL regular season on Sept. 7 against the Washington Commanders.
