The New England Patriots are set to wrap up their preseason action against the New York Giants. With two games under their belt, players have gotten game reps, and entering their third game, remaining healthy is key.
The season is fast approaching, and losing a player in a meaningless preseason contest could be season-altering. But game reps are also invaluable, so it’s always a tough line to tow.
Will Drake Maye Play Against the New York Giants?
The Patriots have a decision to make on their franchise QB, Drake Maye, and his availability hasn’t been confirmed entering their final preseason game.
Maye’s status against the Giants hasn’t been confirmed. It’s unlikely on a short week that he will appear against the Giants after already receiving in-game reps in both of their first two preseason games. Some teams use the final preseason game as an opportunity for resting starters and other players to showcase why they deserve a roster spot.
Head coach Mike Vrabel was asked on Monday about whether starters would appear in tonight’s game and didn’t commit to either side. Vrabel addressed that Monday and Tuesday’s practice would help him make a decision.
“I think we’ll have to just manage some of those reps…And then there will be a group of guys that get a lot of reps tomorrow that are going to be good, important reps. So, based on how that goes, that’ll tell me a lot for Thursday night,” Vrabel said in a press conference on Monday.
By appearing in both preseason games and reportedly getting a lot of action in practice, Maye is unlikely to suit up for the Patriots tonight, according to the Boston Globe. There is no need to risk an injury to Maye right at the end of training camp by putting him out there against the Giants.
Busy day for Drake Maye, which could indicate he won’t play Thursday, and other notes from Patriots practice. https://t.co/rBJq7o2uAB

Maye is the Patriots’ next hope to take them to a Super Bowl. After some tough years, Patriots fans feel they have a quarterback who can develop into a star and bring them back to the playoffs.
After Tom Brady set such a high standard with the franchise, fans expect greatness and nothing less. All the pressure is now on Maye to get them back where the organization feels they belong.
Maye showed flashes in his rookie year while dealing with subpar conditions. The offensive line wasn’t great, and when combined with one of the worst receiving cores in the NFL, Maye wasn’t in the best position to succeed, but he showed that he can hang in the NFL.
Now, entering his second season with an improved roster and new head coach, it’s time for the 22-year-old quarterback to make a sophomore leap and stack wins.
