Leylah Fernandez Reveals How ‘Family Values’ Influenced Her to Compete in Monterrey as She Prepares for US Open

Leylah Fernandez shares how ‘family values’ inspired her to compete in Monterrey while gearing up for the US Open.

Canadian tennis star Leylah Fernandez has been making waves with her impressive performance this season, culminating in her biggest career title at the Washington Open in July. The 22-year-old from Montreal has shown remarkable resilience and form as she prepares for the upcoming US Open, where she famously reached the final in 2021.

How Did Her Family Values Influence Leylah Fernandez to Participate in Monterrey?

When a PFSN member asked Fernandez about what the Monterrey Open brings out of her, she replied: “I think this event, as a whole, brings out positivity and joy.” She said that the tournament mirrored her family values and added:

“Their slogan is ‘Vivir es increíble’ and I agree with it 100%. So every time I hear it, I see it in the stadium, walking up to the courts, it just puts a smile on my face because that has been one of our family values. To enjoy life, to enjoy the good moments, the bad moments. So in a match when I’m playing, I remember the slogan ‘Vivir es increíble’ and it just brings out the best in me.”

Fernandez has a strong record at the Monterrey Open, having won the singles title twice consecutively. In 2021, she won the title by defeating Viktorija Golubic in the final, without dropping a single set throughout the tournament. She defended her title in 2022 as she defeated Camila Osorio in a thrilling three-set final, making her name at the tournament.

She was also asked about her recent Washington Open win and how that makes her feel entering the US Open. Fernandez explained:

“It feels great winning Washington. It was my biggest title. It was a tough tournament too. So being able to win it in that fashion gives me a lot of confidence. But I also know that every tournament, every week is different. Players are going to go in the US Open in New York with a lot of energy, confidence and a lot of motivation to do well.”

This was the biggest win of Fernandez’s career, as this was her first WTA 500 title, after she had previously won three WTA 250 titles, twice at Monterrey.

How Does Fernandez’s Recent Form Look Before Entering the US Open?

Fernandez captured her fourth career title at the Mubadala Citi DC Open in July, defeating Anna Kalinskaya 6-1, 6-2 in a dominant final performance, marking her first title since the Hong Kong Open in October 2023.

The path to the top wasn’t easy for Fernandez, as she had to conquer top seed Jessica Pegula early in the tournament. Her three-hour, 12-minute marathon semifinal against third seed Elena Rybakina tested her as the match featured three tiebreakers.

Fernandez is currently ranked around 33 with a season record of 21 wins and 19 losses. The Canadian’s game has shown particular strength on hard courts, winning all four career titles on the same surface. Her Washington victory demonstrated the aggressive baseline play and mental toughness that carried her to the 2021 US Open final, where she defeated several top-ranked players, including defending champion Naomi Osaka.

At the recent Monterrey Open, where she is a two-time former champion, Fernandez secured a confidence-boosting first-round victory over Jaqueline Cristian 6-3, 7-5. This win came after back-to-back opening-round exits at the Montreal and Cincinnati Opens, making the victory particularly meaningful as she builds momentum toward New York.
