‘Clown Behavior’ — As Hugh Freeze and Auburn Receive Congratulations, Fans Blast Decision to Claim More Championships

Auburn and Hugh Freeze face backlash after announcing four more national titles, raising banners and stirring debate over legitimacy and history.

Hugh Freeze walked into a firestorm Tuesday that had nothing to do with recruiting or play-calling. Auburn’s decision to claim four more national championships sent shockwaves through college football, with fans calling it everything from “clown behavior” to outright embarrassing.

The move transforms Auburn from a program with two widely accepted titles and a couple of unofficial titles into one that claims nine total championships.

Why Did Auburn Suddenly Claim Four More National Championships?

Auburn announced Tuesday it will now recognize itself as national champion in four additional seasons: 1910, 1914, 1958, and 2004. The Tigers plan to raise banners for all these titles, marking a dramatic shift from their historically conservative approach to championship claims.

Athletic director John Cohen defended the decision in a formal statement, explaining Auburn’s new philosophy toward its football history.

“For too long, Auburn has chosen a humble approach to our program’s storied history, choosing to recognize only Associated Press National Championships,” Cohen said.

“Starting this fall, we have made the decision to honor the accomplishments of our deserving student-athletes, coaches, and teams from Auburn’s proud history. Our visible National Championship recognitions now align with the well-established standard used by the NCAA’s official record book and our peers across the nation,” he continued.

The newly claimed honors bring Auburn’s total to nine national championships. Previously, the Tigers acknowledged titles from 1913, 1957, 1983, 1993, and 2010. The Associated Press crowned Auburn champion in 1957, while Heisman-winning QB Cam Newton led the Tigers to the BCS title in 2010 after an undefeated season.

How Are Fans Reacting to Auburn’s Championship Claims?

The response from Auburn supporters and college football fans was immediate and largely negative. One fan described the decision as “clown behavior,” while others questioned the timing and necessity of the move.

Another critic noted, “Self-claiming titles and still don’t have as many as Bama.” Notably, the Tigers’ cross-state rivals claim 18 national titles, with some of the older ones prior to Bear Bryant’s tenure being claimed similarly to Auburn’s “new” championships.

“You know as a fan I don’t like this one bit this is pretty embarrassing. I wish our program would be focusing less on the past and more on the present and future,” a fan remarked.

However, not all reactions were critical. “That seems fine to me. When I look at other team’s claims, it’s all (also) a clown show. Who should singularly abstain?” another fan remarked.

What Makes These Championship Claims Controversial?

The timing of Auburn’s announcement appears particularly awkward given the program’s recent struggles. Auburn finished the 2024 season with a 5-7 record and missed bowl eligibility for the second time in three years under Freeze. The Tigers went 2-6 in SEC play, highlighting the gap between their historical claims and current performance.

The expansion includes recognition of titles from vastly different eras of college football. The pre-major poll era titles in 1910, 1913, and 1914 come from when the sport bore little resemblance to modern college football.

Meanwhile, the 1958, 1983, 1993, and 2004 teams represent more recent campaigns in which Auburn finished highly ranked but didn’t win the most widely recognized championships of their respective seasons. Still, the three prior to 2004 were from before the creation of the BCS in the mid- to late 90s.

Of the newly claimed championships, five Auburn teams finished their seasons undefeated. The 1913, 1983, and 1993 squads were already listed in the NCAA’s official record book as champions named by NCAA-recognized selectors, giving those claims more historical backing than others.

Auburn had previously taken a conservative approach to championship recognition, promoting only the 1957 and 2010 titles that were widely accepted. Tuesday’s announcement represents a fundamental shift in how the Tigers market their football legacy, aligning with practices used by other programs that claim multiple disputed championships.

While many of the historical national championships claimed by other schools are widely accepted, most of the claims date back years.

Most recently, the UCF Knights claimed the 2017 national title after going 13-0 and defeating the Auburn Tigers in the Peach Bowl. While the College Football Playoff was the standard “decider,” the school used the less-popular Colley Matrix rankings as proof.
