Summer of Alex Ovechkin Continues With Another Grand Gesture Lined Up for Russian NHL Hero

Alex Ovechkin’s summer of celebrations continues as Dynamo Moscow prepares to honor the NHL’s all-time goals leader at a special homecoming event.

Every summer tells its own story, but for Alex Ovechkin, this one has been filled with celebrations, honors, and a steady reminder of what he means to the game of hockey.

At 39 years old, Ovechkin is no longer just an NHL superstar chasing goals; he’s a living legend being honored in his home country for breaking Wayne Gretzky’s all-time goal record. And the tributes just keep coming.

After a ceremony earlier this summer before Russia’s “Match of the Year,” Ovechkin is set for another moment in the spotlight. His former club, Dynamo Moscow, will host a special celebration in his honor on Aug. 22 at VTB Arena in Moscow.

For Ovechkin, who grew up in Dynamo’s academy and began his professional career there, it’s a fitting homecoming. For fans, it’s another chance to celebrate a player who not only conquered the NHL but also carried Russian hockey on his back for two decades.

Dynamo Moscow Honors Legendary Alumni Alex Ovechkin

Dynamo Moscow confirmed the event with an announcement on Instagram.

“Next Friday, at 4:00 pm, together with you, we will honor the legendary hockey player and famous Dynamo player, Alexander Ovechkin,” the post said. “The alumnus of the white-blues, the Stanley Cup winner, and the NHL record holder will be the guest of honor at our hockey festival!”

The celebration, titled “Dynamo at the Start,” will mark another major recognition of Ovechkin’s career-defining achievement: breaking Gretzky’s all-time goals record on April 6 against the New York Islanders. He didn’t just pass the milestone; he stormed past it, finishing the 2024-25 NHL season with 897 career goals.

That number cements him as the most prolific scorer in hockey history, a record many thought would never fall.

For Dynamo Moscow, it’s also deeply personal. Ovechkin was a star in their system before ever setting foot in North America. He played his first four professional seasons with Dynamo in the old Russian Super League, returned during the 2012-13 NHL lockout, and has maintained a formal advisory role with the club since 2010.

Dynamo fans have long seen Ovechkin as their own, and now they get to welcome him back as the greatest goal scorer hockey has ever known.

The team even hinted at the possibility of Ovechkin wearing their jersey again someday. Dynamo president Viktor Voronin recently stated that the club would be ready to negotiate his return once his contract with the Washington Capitals expires next summer.

While no one knows if Ovechkin would play in Russia again, the idea of a homecoming season with Dynamo has fans buzzing.

The upcoming festival will not be Ovechkin’s only appearance this month. After Moscow, he is scheduled to participate in Pavel Datsyuk’s “Magic Game” in Yekaterinburg on Aug. 30, another chance for fans to see him celebrated alongside other Russian hockey icons.

From there, he will reportedly return to the Washington, D.C. area in early September to prepare for Capitals training camp.

All of this adds up to one clear truth: Ovechkin is no longer just a star athlete; he’s a national treasure. His records belong to NHL history, but his roots tie him forever to Russia.

Each summer stop, whether it’s soccer fields, hockey arenas, or charity matches, shows just how wide his influence stretches and how much people want to honor him while he’s still active.
