QB Marcel Reed Reveals Which Texas A&M Star Could Be Biggest Breakout Under Mike Elko

Texas A&M QB Marcel Reed highlights a potential breakout star as the Aggies aim to revamp their offense under Mike Elko.

The SEC is loaded with quarterback talent this year, but few are as intriguing as Texas A&M’s Marcel Reed. The sophomore from Nashville has emerged as one of the Aggies’ most promising players.

Reed threw for 1,864 yards and 15 touchdowns last season, while also running for 547 yards, making him a dual threat capable of breaking open games on his own. Now, as he steps into a bigger role, all eyes are on what he can do in year two.

But while Aggie fans are eager to watch Reed, the quarterback himself has his eyes on another new face in College Station, one he believes could be the missing piece in Mike Elko’s offense.

QB Marcel Reed Picks KC Concepcion As His Most Anticipated Teammate

Appearing on SportsCenter, Reed was asked which new teammate he was most excited to line up with. Without hesitation, he said, “KC Concepcion.” Concepcion arrives in Aggieland after two seasons at NC State, where he made 124 catches for 1,299 yards and 16 touchdowns.

“You know, I just mentioned him earlier, but he’s one of our top receivers,” Reed said. “He has a history of being a really good receiver, and I’m really excited to play beside him this year, get on the ball, and get him some yards.”

As a freshman at NC State, Concepcion set school records with 71 receptions for 839 yards and 10 touchdowns. He was named ACC Rookie of the Year in 2023 and built a reputation as a precise route runner. For Reed, having a target that polished in the slot could be game-changing.

The Aggies need that boost. They finished 8-5 last season, ending the year on a three-game skid. Their passing attack ranked just 84th in the nation, averaging 211 yards per game.

To make matters worse, top wideout Noah Thomas transferred to Georgia after ranking only 23rd in the SEC in receiving yards. That level of production won’t cut it in the nation’s toughest conference.

College football analyst JD Pickell summed it up, saying, “My take on this is if you are going to be a team that competes for the national championship, you need to be better than 23rd in your conference for your best receiver.”

Pickell also said Concepcion is “as advertised” early in fall camp, adding that if A&M wants to move from good to great, its receivers have to be the “Mentos to the Coke”.

In other words, Concepcion must be the explosive addition that transforms A&M’s offense into one capable of contending for the playoffs. “And I have to believe A&M knows that,” added Pickell.

With Concepcion in the slot, Micah Craver stretching the field and former five-star Terry Bussey in the mix, Reed finally has the weapons to match his skill set. The only question is whether he and Concepcion can click quickly.

If the chemistry develops, Texas A&M’s offense could look more dangerous than it has since the Johnny Manziel era. For Reed, the opportunity is massive but straightforward. For the Aggies, it might be the difference between another middling finish and a season that shakes up the SEC West.
