The tension between Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones and star pass rusher Micah Parsons hit a new level this training camp. Fans felt every sting as Jones lobbed public insults at Parsons and flat-out refused to deal with his agent. This saga is more than a typical contract standoff– ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith says Jones is trying to outmaneuver a young star.
Why Is Stephen A. Smith Calling Out Jerry Jones Over Micah Parsons?
In recent years, Jones has been known for fumbling negotiations with his biggest names and staying away from free agent splash moves. Back in 2023, All-Pro guard Zack Martin held out of training camp, angry over contract talks.
Then in 2024, Jones waited until the last minute before getting deals done for quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb.
Adding to the drama, that same offseason the Cowboys needed a running back but Jones decided not to go after Derrick Henry. Through it all, Smith never held back. Back in November 2024, he called out Jones’ team management, even comparing his mental sharpness to Joe Biden’s.
Stephen A. Smith “I’m getting very very worried about Jerry Jones… I find myself thinking about Joe Biden before he backed out of running for reelection. I think Jerry’s one month older than President Joe Biden for crying out loud… where the hell are his family members?” pic.twitter.com/8YMpffSMX8

Now, it looks like Smith has hit his breaking point with Jones. Right as Parsons and Jones butted heads over a contract, Smith went off live on “First Take”, saying the owner’s not just bungling talks– he’s flat-out disrespecting the three-time All-Pro.
“But this year, it took on a life of its own, because of the flagrant disrespect that he has shown towards Micah Parsons,” Smith said.
Smith isn’t alone in thinking this offseason has crossed a line. Jones went after Parsons in public and refused to engage with his agent, sticking to direct talks only. Smith says Jones is using the situation to get leverage on Parsons.
“To talk to a 25, 26-year-old football player, and act like that’s tantamount to an agreement, without his representation,” Smith said. “To go around talking as if you really did have an agreement, I don’t know what anyone is talking about. That’s taking advantage, that’s bullying.”
What Does Jerry Jones’ Approach Mean for the Dallas Cowboys?
Smith isn’t backing down. Parsons hired an agent to ensure he has an expert in his corner, like every top athlete.
But Jones keeps shooting for direct negotiation, even trying to end things with a handshake, which isn’t how these contract extensions go.
The Cowboys star is one of the best on defense and is thinking long-term with his first NFL extension. Jones may not buy the importance of agents, but everyone knows their job is to protect players from unfair deals. Smith says the owner’s disrespect and attempts to exploit Parsons are turning the star away– the main reason the team’s top defender wants out.
